The link is for hanging a yak on the wall. I'm not sure how you envision using them on a trailer, but unless you plan on mounting and supporting a sheet of plywood vertically, I can't picture a way to use them. If you don't mind a suggestion, a car top bracket can easily be mounted to a flat surface. Most will hold two yaks and on a trailer would give plenty of support.

They would be bolted to a vertical 2X4. Regular J-cradles cannot mount to a vertical surface, can they?

I would not use them in the application you mention.  Why does it have to be mounted vertically?  If you have cross beams or even a flat horizontal trailer it should be no issue to toss it on there and strap it down.

Thanks flyfisher. The reason is I have to be able to haul 4 kayaks. My Frontier 12' is on the bottom, since it's so wide and heavy, so I have to find room for 3 more. I was thinking of 2 sitting flat on the top, and 1 mounted vertically on 1 side. If all 3 go on top, I would need to use 3 sets of J-cradles. My concern is the J-cradles getting stolen while we're out on the water.

Do you think those cradles are not strong enough?

Well my thing is those cradles are not designed for a moving vehicle and the forces encountered.

How wide is your trailer?  and do you have a pic?  i am having a tough time visualizing what you are describing.  And i doubt anyone would steal the j cradles but anything can happen.  I used to have J cradles on my subaru and they could be removed in about 2 minutes with no tools and i never had them stolen.

Is it not possible to just stand them all up on their side for transporting one next to the other?

Could it work?  I am sure it could by just securing the yak with some ratchet straps to the trailer, but it does not seem very safe to me at all.  Especially if you get into an accident situation or something where you have to stop quickly. You don't want that kayak flying towards the front into the back window.  Those wall hangers are not built to withstand a lot of pressure they are just meant to have the yak resting on it.

Edit to add. I reread the whole thread. You have thought of the "J" brackets. I never had someone steal mine. Knock on wood. even when left for 6 hours.

How about something like this

Using these, you should be able to get them on your trailer.

Thanks guys.

Team_Dougherty, can those J-cradles from Amazon be bolted to a 2X4 which is lying flat? Or do they have to be mounted to a pipe or a bar?

Yes look at post 22 on the thread I posted above. pabassr made a similar modification to his trailer.
