When out today for 4 hours and it pored down rain.  Nothing was biting.  I tried just about every topwater bait I had, crankbaits (deep and shallow), senkos, tubes, not a bite.  Then I put on a Fat Ika before I decided to call it a day. (Usually by know, I have caught at least 5 or 6 nice large mouth)  On the third cast with the Ika, something hits it like a ton of bricks.  I set the hook and fight is on.  The way the fish was fighting I knew it was not a large mouth.  When it was all said and done, I had caught a nice 3lb Spotted Channel Cat.  Nothing huge but it was fun.

The Ika never seems to surprise me at to what it will attract.  Any of you guys use this bait with success?

I used to use it a ton. I've kind of gotten away from it for some reason. I may rig one up next time I'm out

Fat Ika the best (or worst) kept secret. I've caught trout, catfish, smallie, bluegill, along with a lot of LMB on Ika's and Fat Ikas. Great bait

About 75% of my time is spent with one on, my favorite lure.

I bought up all I could of the watermelon chartreuse (Kinami Palm Tree)  they were discontinued on sale for $1.99

That's a great score.  I love the bi color ones.  I have seen these at Wal Mart a few years ago.  Are they exactly the same?

I had a great success with Fat Ika. This is my second favorite GY lure after Senko.

As far as I can tell they are the same, package says "by GYCB". I have & use both brands but the saltwater that is pictured is suppose to be a little different just havent tried one out yet.

it always amazes me how many bass we catch on Fat Ikas swimming them back to the boat on retrieve, rigged backwards, what do the fish think they are ?

I fish it on spinning tackle, #6 Yo-Zuri Hybrid Ultra Soft, 4/0 EWG Gamakatsu, T-rigged weightless and weedless, skirt up. Although the lure is often described as nothing more than a solid tube, the action is totally different. I work tubes with more of an exaggerated verticle hop so that the lure can exhibit its spiraling fall. The Fat Ika does not spiral.

I cast parallel to cover or structure, let the lure settle to the bottom and fish it like a Senko with a short (6-12") horizontal sweep. I then let the lure fall on slack line so that it falls vertically, not moving forward. I work the lure slowly, letting it pause for 10-20 seconds or more before moving it again. I like to picture a crawdad moving over rocks and hiding.

You will rarely miss a hook up. When the fish bites, reel down and set the hook firmly. Bass will not let go of this lure.

I hook it up reversed with either a 4/0 EWG Gami or a Owner 4/0 EWG Plus (this is my favorite).  One other hook I have tried is a 5/0 Deep Throat Gami.  All three work well.  I fish it just like a weightless senko most of the time but sometimes I will fish it like a tube and I have even had success fishing it like a quick retrieve jerk bait.  I usually fish it with a Shimano Core, a G. Loomis 803C GLX Jig and Worm rod, and 12lb Trilene 100% FC.

I have caught fish in open water and tons close to the bank.

This is the Owner EWG Plus                                              Gamakatsu EWG                                      Gamakatsu Deep Throat

The bend at the hook point turns down further than the rest on the Deep Throat.  The EWG is good but the hook pulls away from the plastic faster than I like.  The Owner has a different action when falling and has a wider gap, making hook sets easier.

How do you rig and fish these?

Roadwarrior post was well done. My post may be a bit misleading. After I work them on the bottom and am ready for another cast, I will reel the ika in the rest of the way a get ready for another cast. Somedays the bass will actually hit the ika as I reel them back to the boat rather fast.

It's a great lure that works in very tough conditions. Rig it upside down to where the eye of the hook is poking out the top where the tentacles are. It will swim and sashay away from you on the fall. Twitch it back up and let it fall again. Great for finicky, shallow water bass. A 4/0 EWG hook is the best.
