Super User tcbass Posted July 12, 2014 Super User Posted July 12, 2014 Firstly, I have way too many frogs. I have Spro, Booyah, LiveTarget, Scumfrog, and Matsui for hollow body frogs and Ragetail Toad, Zoom Horny Toad, and Zman Frogs for solid body. If you've followed my post you'll see that I've never really had success with hollow body frogs which is why a Ragetail Toad, which is so effective, is really my favorite frog and most used. I've caught a fish on a Spro Popper and one on a Scum Frog Bigfoot but that's really it. I really wanted to be successful with hollow bodies so when I saw a review on bassresource.com at the effectiveness of the Savage Gear 3D frog with action legs I picked up 2 in 2-3/4 size when I was at Cabelas because they were on sale. I made the mistake of picking up two of the imitation legged ones and not action legged ones like it said in the review. Well, I tried the leopard one with imitation legs on two different days with no success. To be fair I didn't catch anything on topwater that day including my Ragetail Toad or KVD Sexy Dawg. I will try the imitation legs again on a day when they are hitting topwater. I also want to use the Spro and others and see if they are also effective. So, when I saw that Tackle Warehouse had their July 4th sale I ordered one of the Savage Gear 3D Frogs with Action legs in the 2-1/4 size in dark leopard. I only ordered 1 because I wasn't impressed with my initial outings. It came in the mail yesterday and I went out fishing. After about 10 unsuccessful casts to pads and open water near a dock I was about to change lures. I put my rod down for a second to send a text and when I started reeling in I realized I had a fish on. I reeled it in and it was a nice little bass, about a pound. The fish had so quietly sucked it in without a splash or commotion I didn't even notice while the frog was sitting on the water motionless. Well, I cast again and was using a pop, pop, pop, pause, retrieve and when on the first pause a bass crushed it. I reeled him in too. Another 3/4 pounder. After some more casting and retrieving I tried a straight retrieve. I noticed if you reel too fast you get a roostertail and I didn't want that. I just tried a straight retrieve like a Ragetail Toad and got hit by another 3/4 pounder. I boated him and kept moving. Note, during all of these bites the water was glass. The waves started picking up and as I went down the docks I cast past a dock and started my pop, pop, pop, pause retrieve. Once again on the pause a pound fish hit it. I reeled it in. I caught 2 more fish that day with the Savage Gear 3D frog. You do need to squeeze the frog to drain the water out every once and awhile. I've got to say I'm impressed. I've never had this much success with a hollow body frog. I even fished with a Ragetail Toad the same day to see if I could get anything. I got one good bite on a sink with it and lost it 1/2 way to the boat. (With Ragetail Toads I let them sink to the bottom and a lot of times a fish will eat it. Just like a Senko.). Other than that though, no other bites on the Ragetail. I did catch about 5 on the KVD Sexy Dawg yesterday too. So the fish were obviously hungry for topwater. My brother joined me later in the trip and we caught some good ones on Senkos. Some over the 1-1/2lbs and a half mark with the biggest being 2.7lbs. So the bigger fish where eating and aggressive. No luck with weightless flukes or a swim jig with KVD Rodent trailer. I love this frog and will definitely be buying some more. However, I would get them in the larger 2-3/4 size. I hope that would perhaps make some larger fish bite. I would definitely stick with the 'Action Legs' over the imitation legs and like I said, I'd get the biggest size. My leopard frog had a white belly. I think belly color for frogs is far more important than the top because a fish doesn't see the top, no matter how realistic it is. That's just for fisherman. Score: 5 out of 5. Durable and effective with sharp hooks. I didn't lose 1 fish. Could you ask for anything more? First fish, can you tell that he wanted it bad? Second fish, hit it hard: Third fish, in the weeds: The underwater vegetation in the area: The conditions: overcast with light wave action. Spot where I actually caught one of the bass. You can see catch and release works. This fish has 2 old hook holes in his mouth. Quote
