flyingmonkie Posted July 12, 2014 Posted July 12, 2014 I thought tonight would be the night - full moon straight overhead, slight south breeze, and sitting on a spot that was super productive last weekend. Nothing! Packed light, so my only options were a black w/red flake rage tail worm with a rattle, and a black buzz bait w/ clacker. I got one bluegill bite on the worm. I've been chasing a night bass for years. Not seriously - a few times a year - but unsuccessfully nonetheless. That moon was bright! Who got bit (by a bass) tonight??? Quote
Slade House Posted July 12, 2014 Posted July 12, 2014 got bit on a drop shot early on , but that was about it Quote
Shanes7614 Posted July 12, 2014 Posted July 12, 2014 Spots during the day aren't always the best places to fish at night. Try looking for shallow flats with lots of cover. Fish will move from deeper water to shallow at night to feed. Quote
Super User K_Mac Posted July 12, 2014 Super User Posted July 12, 2014 Night fishing is just like fishing during the day. You have to find the fish. As mentioned above often fish will move a little more shallow, but not always. Camping on one spot until you find fish may not be a good idea. If you have a history on that spot at night and know it often produces, that might justify it. My advice is to have a plan before you start. I almost always start on the deeper edges and work my way in. If that doesn't work I will repeat that pattern as the night goes on. I did not get out tonight, but will a couple of times this next week. I can promise you one thing: Have one night when they are on and it will change the way you fish! Good luck. Quote
timsford Posted July 12, 2014 Posted July 12, 2014 I didnt get out last night but i exclusively night fish during the summer and always catch more then during the day. Try fishing shallower than during daylight.and bring a few other lures. I always do best on black spinnerbaits with a single colorado blade and black 10 inch worms. Black jigs are pretty good producers for me as well. Try putting worm rattles in your soft plastics i always get more bites with more noise and vibration. Good luck and keep at it i enjoy fishing at night because i catch way more hawgs and there is much less pressure and pleasure boaters to put up with Quote
Droppingshot Posted July 12, 2014 Posted July 12, 2014 I went out with a friend. Snuck into our local park. I ended up landing three fish. Two three's and a four. But I was using braid with a broomstick of a rod and a ms slammer. So I was losing fish left and right. Prob lost about 10 fish total. It was excruciating. I need to save up for a larger reel with mono. Or a more moderate rod. My buddy, who I got into fishing got his personal best at five pounds fifteen ounces. On a spitting wa frog. His first topwater fish ever. And we have to hoist the fish up about 10' to the dock because the bank isn't accessible. An amazing night for sure. Quote
Droppingshot Posted July 12, 2014 Posted July 12, 2014 I chose to pack light like you flying monkey. All I brought was a scale, forceps, scissors, and my 7" ms slammer. Not even in a night color. Light rainbow. Quote
z7master167 Posted July 12, 2014 Posted July 12, 2014 I got out last night, we caught 17 from 7-12 all shorties though. Caught most of mine on a green pumkin senko wacky rigged, my dad caught his on drop shot Quote
Super User everythingthatswims Posted July 13, 2014 Super User Posted July 13, 2014 I caught 2 on a pad crasher JR, couldn't throw much of anything else, it's hard to dodge clumps of algae and hydrilla in the dark. Lots of blow ups that didn't eat the bait, some fish would miss it 2-3 times on one cast! Exciting for sure Quote
flyingmonkie Posted July 13, 2014 Author Posted July 13, 2014 Round #2 with the full "Buck Moon" tonight was a SUCCESS! Caught two chunks on back-to-back casts with a black spinnerbait with a single purple CO blade. Then proceeded to loose it on stump. Few nibbles on a black/blue Brush Hog, nothing on a Hula Popper. Beautiful night, though - that moon is BRIGHT! Cool experience to be able to fish at midnight without any artificial light. Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted July 13, 2014 Global Moderator Posted July 13, 2014 One of my homemade black and blue bladed jigs was the only thing they'd eat for me Thursday night/Friday morning. For some reason I had a terrible time hooking up and keeping fish stuck, something I never have problems with this bait. Should have had a dozen or more over 3 pounds instead of the 2 I caught. Still caught another 20 or so small ones, better than nothing. Weather was almost perfect though, and we were the only boat on the lake Quote
flippin4it. Posted July 13, 2014 Posted July 13, 2014 After fishing at night over the years it has come down to 2 baits, the devil horse and the Fat Ika in black with blue flakes rigged backwards.. Try it. Quote
missouribigbass Posted July 14, 2014 Posted July 14, 2014 Flats shallow water buzz bait you will catch fish at night. Quote
