I know there's 5,000 topics about this on the website and I've read just about all the threads but I want a few final answers about senko's.

1. I've bought green pumpkin with red flake and had significant success. I also bought baby bass and had great success, both 5".

-->I want to get back to buying 4" along with the 5". Which do YOU feel produces the best? What other colors are proven bass catchers? Also, what colors, through your

experience--should be avoided at all costs.

2. Under what circumstances, if any, should a senko be fished weighted?

----------------------------------------------

Miscellaneous Question

1. What is a good buzzbait to purchase and where can I find it? Bass Pro, ***, etc?

2. Should I throw Zoom Horny Toads into frog like habitat? Lilly Pads, edges of ponds, etc.

THANKS FOR THE HELP

I have found color does not matter much, if at all with Senkos. I stick with the basics

GP, watermellon, pumpkin, black/blue, baby bass, junebug, brown,  etc

So when it comes to Senkos -- it's more of a location and opportunity type situation.

Color doesn't really matter much when fishing a senko style bait.  The other day I threw junebug early in the morning, then red shad for late morning and then GP after noon through about 2pm and caught fish on all of them.  I have found that finding the fish is the hard part, catching them is easy, and most of the time they will hit anything you throw at them, if you can find them.

That's why I love fishing with a wacky rigged senko, it catches fish for me, 365 days a year, 24 hours a day.

Brand doesn't matter much either if you're fishing a senko type bait with weight. Yamamoto senkos have the best action weightless, BUT...put a 1/16th oz wacky jig head, or belly weighted EWG hook on any of the more popular knockoffs, like a Yum dinger or Big Bite stick and they wiggle pretty good too. And since I hardly ever fish them without weight, I stick to the knock offs... It's easier on the wallet and they are just as effective. But the key is adding weight. It took me a little while playing with different weight wacky jigs, and belly weighted ewg hooks to come up with a system that works, and works well... For me.

Stick with basic colors, GP, Black, and watermelon and varieties of the sort like watermelon red flake, or watermelon candy and so on. I do well fishing them Texas style weightless and I almost never add weight except for the times I use them on a shaky head. I was blown away when a friend put a Senko on a shaky head, I said it was a waste of time, the action is on the fall and by rigging it in a shaky head you ruin the action. Guess what? Yeah, it was great on a shaky head and while it is, there have to be certain conditions to do it. 3" Senkos are killer on a small 1/16oz or 1/8oz ball head jig with a #1 hook, it is an ultra finesse tactic that really works anywhere, last week we were fishing for river smallies, we caught them using lipless cranks a few days later but the trip prior the only thing that got bit was a black neon 3" Senko on a ball head jig.

For me, if I'm fishing wacky style, I prefer original senkos.  If for some reason I'm fishing them tx rigged, weighted or otherwise, I find the knock offs last longer.  I like the BPS stick-o, singers have worked for me in the past.  Chompers makes a good bait that is a little more durable than the senko, but not by a whole lot.  Chompers makes a color called "honeysuckle" that is a good clear water color for me.

I use the 5 inch senkos.  I have tried the alternatives, Yum Dingers, BPS version, Gander Mountians, and one online maker (can't remember the name).  Nothing works as good as the Senko.  The BPS version came close but if I buy the senkos on sale they are the same price as the ones from BPS.  As far as color goes anything dark will work.  There is one that I love that is not a conventional color though, Smoke blue pearl silver laminate.    I can't tell you why it works it just does.

I fish it weighted when I went to get to the bottom or a certain depth faster.

Give the zoom fluke stick a look over Bps carries them also a good working stick is the TriggerX they have a pretty darn good action, but they got a funk about them... Some kinda fish urine or something...

I have a pool that is 4 ft deep that I use to test lures in because a fish tank is not deep enough to test action. Believe me or not... I really don't care. Put on a snorkel and go see for yourselves! Senkos are unique in their fall rate as well as their "shimmy". Nothing comes close. A few stick baits fall with no action. None not even a little. They just slowly fall. I'm sure you can catch fish with them under the right circumstances. When viewed underwater it's not even funny how different the senko performs compared to competition. That said I have not tested every single knock off out there. There are actually several plastic baits that say they do this or that but when tested underwater with snorkel masks they fail. Anyways take it for what you want. Tight lines everyone!

Besides the normal watermelon black red, and green pumpkin I have had good luck with Baby Bass, pumpkin black and green flake, and watermelon with large red and green,

Green pumpkin black flake, green pumpkin purple/green flake, and watermelon black flake are my favorites. I have not had any success at all with varieties of black.

Carolina rig, or split shot rig! I have also had good luck putting a 1/16 bullet weight on one so I could get through some sparse hydrilla.

I use custom buzzbaits, so can't help you there. I have not tied on a buzzbait that did not catch fish though, so I'd just look for one with a quality hook and wire.

Throw those horny toads anywhere you want. Open water, moss, laydowns, etc. They will catch fish everywhere.

You know come to think of it, I haven't done well at all with a black senko, or any dark earthy colors, humm, who knows, dark colors on ribbon tail you bet, but not senko,

One of my best days fishing Oneida Lake was a Take a Soldier Fishing events. My guys threw black Yum Dingers and each caught three limits of smallies, many that were over 3 lbs. why black? It's what I had a lot of. I don't think color mattered so much as the location. Many fished deep shoals and sunken barges and blanked. We fished shallow shorelines near spawning flats for active prespawn fish. Location trumps color every time.

"Location trumps color any time", that's a pretty good point.

A guy at Bass Pro talked my ear off about how successful he was with the Smoke w/ Black & Hologram senko's so I caved this time around and bought a pack of 4" along with my Light Green Pumpkin & Small Red Flake in 5".

We'll see how that goes.
