PaBass74 Posted July 11, 2014 Posted July 11, 2014 Would I be crazy to try both this weekend in NE PA? Thanks! Quote
papajoe222 Posted July 11, 2014 Posted July 11, 2014 What depth, cover and/or structure do you plan to target? Quote
Mccallister25 Posted July 11, 2014 Posted July 11, 2014 Of course you should try both. Why wouldn't you? 1 Quote
Super User smalljaw67 Posted July 11, 2014 Super User Posted July 11, 2014 I live in NE PA and I wouldn't use the lipless crank unless you are fishing the Susquehanna, or Juniata Rivers. I got my best smallmouth of the day on Monday on a Cotton Cordell Super Spot, black back with a chrome body. The reason I used it was because the smallmouth will position themselves in the riffles to feed this time of year and the water was stained because of all the rain and T-Storms. The frog will work if you are on a lake with emergent grass or pads as long as the pads aren't 2' high in the lake or water you'll be fishing. Right now I'm using regular jigs in 3/8oz and 1/2oz tight to cover close to the bank because most lakes have high water right now, if that doesn't work I'll go with a finesse jig and if I'm not on fish shallow I'll move out to the first break and fish a shaky head. If you have any rip rap a square bill will produce early, it will work the whole day if it is overcast but I find that bite tends to slow down when the sun gets up. 1 Quote
PaBass74 Posted July 12, 2014 Author Posted July 12, 2014 Not necessarily. Perhaps I read too many sites and too many different magazines but I feel like I am always coming across advice on "What to throw", "What not to throw", "What colors to use", "The only bait you'll need in the summer", etc. As a novice, I just wanted to see what people thought. I am here to learn. What a strange question Quote
jignfule Posted July 13, 2014 Posted July 13, 2014 You'll never know until you're out there and give them both a try. Quote

I am here to learn. I think a lot of people get caught up in what the "pros" say. Dont get me wrong, they know and have a lot more experience than I do, but there really is no " standard" in fishing. A lot of people will tell you that topwater fishing can only be done during certain conditions, or is best at this time of day etc. iv caught quality fish in the middle of a 90* day on buzzbaits and spooks in open water. Location is key. You never know until you go out and fish! Quote
