twitchfish Posted July 11, 2014 Posted July 11, 2014 We are the cool guys throwing on their bigger football jigs in deep summer water? Big? Little? Always dark because so deep? Thanks for the input! Twitch 1 Quote
Basspro87 Posted July 12, 2014 Posted July 12, 2014 I like using big because it so easy to keep bottom contact Quote
JGBassinAL Posted July 12, 2014 Posted July 12, 2014 I use 3/4 oz over 15 ft of water and 1/2 in the 10-15 ft range. Either watermelon or green pumpkin. If its sunny I throw watermelon, if its overcast I throw green pumpkin. A lot of times I like a little blue or purple flake in my watermelon, but I just throw straight green pumpkin. Quote

Super User WRB Posted July 12, 2014 Super User Posted July 12, 2014 Have you ever weighed your 1/2 or 3/4 oz jigs? Very few jigs weigh what the label claims. 5/8 was very common football jig and Do-it molds may have one. My ? about big jigs was size or weight? Let's say a 1oz football is big for sake of discussion. I use 1oz football jigs in the winter out west when the water gets in the low 50's because banging a heavy jigs in rocks sometimes get the basses attention and better feel fishing 30-40 feet deep with cold hands. I use 5" trailers on 1oz jigs, that is big! Back in the 70's we used 9" UJ black widow eels on 3/4 oz football jigs, that is a really big jig! I fish my 7/16 oz hair jigs with 4" pork trailers year around and that is considered a big hair jig. Tom Quote
twitchfish Posted July 13, 2014 Author Posted July 13, 2014 Thanks for the replies. I am in 25'-40' of water typically. Usually 1/2, sometimes 3/4 and hardly ever bigger than that. What are you guys putting on those jigs? Big worms? Creatures? Smaller baits on big jigs? And color of the trailers? Always dark because deep and low to no light? Twitch Quote
Super User WRB Posted July 13, 2014 Super User Posted July 13, 2014 When you fish standard bass size jigs 1/2 to 3/4 oz deeper than 20' your line diameter/lb test becomes a critical element to be able to keep in contact and know what is going down there. Off the shelf jigs often are made with heavy wire hooks designed for strong line, this becomes an issue getting hook sets with lighter or smaller diameter line. The ideal wire diameter for deep water jig hook is .045 to .050 in sizes 4/0 and 5/0 when using line diameter between .011 to .013 or 10 to 14 lb FC line or 30 to 40 lb test braid. Keep the trailer size to 3" to 4" with less bulk. Colors depend on what the bass prefer, don't try to think you can see like a bass underwater! All colors can be good, black to white and natural colors like brown, green, red, blue, purple all work as one color or in combinations of colors, every lake is different as to what bass may prefer. My go to color combination is black/purple/brown....anywhere, anytime is what it's called. Tom Quote

Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted July 14, 2014 Global Moderator Posted July 14, 2014 I wish someone made a 5/8. I may try to make my 1/2oz mold bigger? I've got my model bait picked out, just need to sit down and pour the mold. If it works out like it's supposed to I'll have a 5/8oz mold you can borrow. Quote
Siebert Outdoors Posted July 14, 2014 Posted July 14, 2014 I will typically throw a 1/2-3/4 oz for ledges. Anything over about 15 fow I throw the 3/4 almost all the time. The colors I throw are typically black blue, bama craw, or pbj. Quote
bradc36 Posted July 14, 2014 Posted July 14, 2014 Anything mostly black, brown, or green pumpkin works for me in any of the water I fish, no matter what the depth is. Usually use 1/2 up to 10 ft and 3/4 anything deeper. Quote
TNBassin' Posted July 14, 2014 Posted July 14, 2014 I always fish 3/4oz jugs but I fish deep. I either use a rage craw for a trailer or cut down a used biffle bug and stick it on. Quote
