A few weeks ago my girlfriend signed me up to be a Marshal for the Delaware River Elite Series event (I live in the Philly area). She did this without my knowledge as a surprise. I just got the email confirming that I'm in! I'm so excited! I'm a huge bass fishing nerd and this is a great opportunity to learn something.

As for her, she just earned some major "ring" points.

Has anyone ever been a marshal before? Is there any tips/advice you want to share?

See you there!

I have been a marshal two times before (Oneida, St. Lawrence River). I never had anything happen that was even close to a problem or rules violation. Most of the guys are honest and know exactly what they can and can't do. It is definitely a good learning experience. When you watch shows you only get to see the catches and maybe a few other moments. When you're on the boat you get to see the periods of struggle throughout the day and the adjustments made.

That is so cool, I have never been that before but I would ask them if you can take a note book..... and just ask as many questions as they allow, I hear some actually never stop talking and will tell you all you need to know, but if they let you I would take notes

It is pretty awesome. As far as asking questions, I would just let the pro do the talking. If they are constantly talking to you then ask all you want. If they seem like they don't want to talk or prefer it that way, then don't ask questions. You can get a feel for it pretty quick. Not sure I would take a notebook out there though, haha.

Ahh forgive me but what's a Marshall?

In the Bassmaster Elite Series there are no coanglers. Instead there are marshals; you ride along and you don't fish and you basically make sure they don't break any rules. It is more a learning experience than anything.

Incredibly jealous, I would have signed up myself if I had known haha. Delaware river (well portions of it at least) are about 50 minutes from my house. When is the event? Maybe I'll cruise on by to check out weigh ins and stuff if regular joes are allowed to even watch?

Of course you're allowed to watch! The weigh-ins are free to come to. The tournament is Aug 7-10. The launch and weigh ins are on the Philadelphia side. I would have to look at my sheet to tell you exactly where it is. The geniuses on the Bassmaster website put the times of the weigh-ins in the "attend" section and then never tell you what launch they are at or where they are at.

The Launch is at Frankford arsenal Boat Launch, 5701 Tacony, Philadelphia, PA

The weigh ins are at Grear Plaza-Penn's Landing, 211 S. Columbus Blvd. Phila, PA

You should receive a packet with all the info soon. If you go to the Bassmaster site, click on Tournaments at the top, then click on Elite and then go down to the right side and click on the #7 Delaware tournament you will find the information sheet. This is the sheet you will get in your packet along with other tings. You will need to fill out the form attached to the Official Rules and mail it in.

I have been a Marshall many times and it is really worth the time and effort and cost.

I met many of the Elite pros while Marshaling and then have been very fortunate enough to actually fish with a few of the same ones later when I stared fishing in the Opens.

A few things: I assume you have been confirmed for the first 3 days. If not-and you want to have a chance to Marshall on the 3rd day make sure you are in the front of the line at registration-there should be a sign up sheet for those who want to Marshall the 3rd day. The field is cut in half so there are not as many spots open and after the second day weigh in is over you will wait with the pros who made the cut and Chuck or whoever will start calling names of Marshalls who were already confirmed for day 3--many are no shows--he will then start down the sign up list.

Of course if you are confirmed for all three days you need not do this, but you will still need to stay for the meeting after the end of the second day weigh in to get your pro pairing.

The last day there are only 12 fishing and the media take most of the spots so no Marshals needed that day.

You will be encouraged to take iphone photos of your pros catches and text them to BASS. The details will be explained at the meeting prior to the tournament.

Be sure to check with your pro anyway to make sure it is ok with him.

If you want to learn from them watch them very closely--especially when they get into their tackle boxes etc. Pay attention to what line type and size they use for each application and ask them when you get a chance. see what kind of knot(s) they tie.

Most of them are more than happy to tell you--you can tell if they are up-tight and pre-occupied so you might have to choose your time.

Do not touch their fish or any of their equipment. Ever.

If he hooks a hawg be ready to move out of the way if he needs to run around the cockpit.

It is perfectly ok to help them launch and/or trailer their boat after weigh in.

assuming you can back a rig that you can't see out the back of.

I always take my binoculars along. I can spot who other competitors are as well as other interesting things.

It is a long day with no chance to fish---it sounds boring, but it is a chance to see how some of the best fishermen in the world operate as well as how a big time tournament is run.

Anyone looking to meet up there? I have never been to an Elite event and would like to go check it out. I do not live far from the weigh in spot.
