ABW Posted July 10, 2014 Posted July 10, 2014 Just got my Powell Diesel 7ft Glass rod, but I don't know what reel to put on it. Using this for lipless cranks, jerkbaits, topwaters and such. Was looking at the gen 3 Revo SX, I saw them on auction site for around $130. Is this a good reel, or should I get a different one? Open to any suggestions. Price range 120-150 Quote
Super User kickerfish1 Posted July 10, 2014 Super User Posted July 10, 2014 The Gen 3 revo line of reels seems to be an unpopular reel line up as a whole. The die hard Abu guys seem to favor the Gen 2 reels especially the Gen 2 Premier. I haven't fished any of them personally but just based upon the amounts of complaints I wouldn't personally get one myself. For around the same $ Lews, Shimano, and Daiwa seem to be producing some of the best products at that price point. 1 Quote
edfitzvb Posted July 10, 2014 Posted July 10, 2014 Amen. Especially Lew's or Shimano. Both excellent companies with good products and excellent quality control Quote

Had the S, SX and STX and only the STX failed to give me issues. I'd say if you're looking at an SX, go look at a Tatula Type R as everyone seems to love them and the Magforce Z system is better than ABU's magtrax. Or there's always the new Curado I. 1 Quote
Tyler B Posted July 10, 2014 Posted July 10, 2014 I have a tatula type r I use. I was seriously considering that reel until someone told me about the tatula and I found out they are better. On Abu's site many people complain about how sometimes they have to turn the reel many times before it clicks and starts to reel in. I got my tatula off ebay for $144 brand new, and only 1 other guy bid. You could go for a regular tatula if you wants and could get one for a lot cheaper I'm sure. I don't think there is much difference except for a lighter spool on the type r, but the only reason why I chose the type r was because of the 8.1:1 gear ratio not offered on the regular tatula! 1 Quote
Bank4Bass Posted July 10, 2014 Posted July 10, 2014 I bought the same rod and paired it with a Lew's speed spool. With the $20 rebate it's hard to pass up at the moment. 1 Quote
ABW Posted July 10, 2014 Author Posted July 10, 2014 Thanks for the input guys. Did a little more research and I think I'm going to go with a BB1 Pro. Quote
Super User fishballer06 Posted July 10, 2014 Super User Posted July 10, 2014 For a little bit more than your price range, you can get the new Shimano Curado I. Or the Diawa Tatuala is another solid choice in your price range. Quote
ABW Posted July 11, 2014 Author Posted July 11, 2014 ^^Lew's is always a good option. Changed my mind again. May go with the Tournament Pro now. Does the TP handle shalllow cranks and 1/2 oz lipless cranks well or is the BB1 Pro a better choice. Usually I throw 1.5's, and I've read that the TP handles lighter lures better. Plus I want a reel that is palmable. Quote
