Super User iabass8 Posted July 10, 2014 Super User Posted July 10, 2014 This guy is a boss for ponying himself up for a demonstration and deserves a beer if you see him. I don't even think his voice cracked. Now whether he was doing the braid removal trick correctly, I don't know. I've never (knock on wood) had that happen. I did bury a 2.5 hook in my thumb but I was able to cut the barb and pull it through. Quote
Super User iabass8 Posted July 10, 2014 Author Super User Posted July 10, 2014 And that F$#K that goes double for this one.... Quote
Droppingshot Posted July 10, 2014 Posted July 10, 2014 This is true. It's one if those vids that makes me cover my mouth with my hand. The dudes a freakin boss Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted July 10, 2014 Global Moderator Posted July 10, 2014 Dude in the first video does a TERRIBLE job trying to get those hooks out! These guys do a much better job and point out what the guy in the first video was doing wrong, you have to commit to the pull! If you or your buddy chickens out on the pull it's just going to hurt worse than it did. When you push down on the hook shank it causes the barb to release from your skin and the fast, hard pull jerks the hook out before the barb can reset. Quote
Super User WIGuide Posted July 10, 2014 Super User Posted July 10, 2014 More proof that the hook trick really does work. Quote
Super User Jar11591 Posted July 10, 2014 Super User Posted July 10, 2014 I really really really hope I never have to refer to this video. I've had some close calls, but never past the barb! Quote
Super User F14A-B Posted July 10, 2014 Super User Posted July 10, 2014 Geez, some good removals... And some galant efforts... It's happened to me a #6 treble... Had to drive my 5 speed manual Eddie Bauer f150 4x4 w/302 bad arse truck... With a crankbait hang on my right hand.. Really fun shifting at that time... Got home and cut the hook point off and pulled it out.... Damned if I don't carry cutters with me now every time I go fishing... It happens! Thanks for all the Vids guys! It's important to know how to do this the right way!!! Quote
HokieBen Posted July 11, 2014 Posted July 11, 2014 I've seen most of these videos a couple times... good to know the removal techniques, but it kinda makes me not want to throw a crankbait! Do you guys have any tips on how to avoid getting hooked when landing a fish with a mouth full of trebles? I usually just tell the fish to calm down before I go for the lip, but they don't always listen. Quote

Definitely have some needle nose pliers handy if you are fishing with anything with treble hooks. I guess you could get some Fish Grips. Quote
OntarioFishingGuy Posted July 11, 2014 Posted July 11, 2014 My dad had a muskie remove a hook from his hand. Just ripped it right out. Quote
skeeter1980 Posted July 11, 2014 Posted July 11, 2014 Back in the 80's I was fishing a river with my best friend.I got a crankbait caught up on some rocks.I yanked it free, and it went flying in my friend's lip.I couldn't get it out,so he drove himself to the hospital, with the crankbait hanging out from his lip.I told him i'd take him,but he said, fish on.Well he came back with a little box.He had the nurse wrapped up the crankbait in gause for me.lol.We laffed about that for a long time.Ross took his own life in the late 80;s.I still think of that day,and miss him a lot. 1 Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted July 13, 2014 Global Moderator Posted July 13, 2014 My dad had a muskie remove a hook from his hand. Just ripped it right out. I've done the same, twice. Once with a brown trout and once with a bass just this past 4th of July. I'd much rather have it done quickly like that then have to know it's coming. Doesn't make it hurt any less though. I heard a story about a guy getting attached to a 50+ inch muskie by one of the oversized trebles on his muskie bait. The hooks went under the tendons in his wrist as the fish surged away while he was trying to get a grip on it's gill plate. Quote

porkleaker Posted July 13, 2014 Posted July 13, 2014 Happened not too long ago to me, right through my knuckle, just the skin...but the best part was the fish was shaking around like mad and the multi-tool we used to try and cut it got stuck....Oh great. Quote
Super User Catch and Grease Posted July 13, 2014 Super User Posted July 13, 2014 Man I just got around to watching this and wow.... Just wow Quote
CDobber Posted July 14, 2014 Posted July 14, 2014 Last night...yep, it was me. Walking to the chosen spot down the path, snapped the tip of the 2 week old rod on a branch. Cast for an hour, nothing doing. Went to put my squarebill on the line, it decided to imbed on my left thumb past the barb AND the front treble into my right hand, fortunately not deep. Drove myself home and then to urgent care with the full lure still attached. The nurse/PA were going to throw away the perfectly good lure, sans the split ring and back treble they cut off! Quote
