Super User roadwarrior Posted July 9, 2014 Super User Posted July 9, 2014 Just out for a short trip to a local pond with nothing but a couple of ShakE2 and GYCB Kut Tail. Fishing is slow (nada), the only action is several families of ducks feeding near the bank. I move up ten steps and the ducks move down just ahead of me. So as I move down the bank I'm casting forward and out, away from the ducks ten feet or more. All of a sudden the first group in front of me spooks and take off while my bait is still in the air. Well, as it happened, one of these birds gets tangled up in the line. I don't know what to do, but a lot of things are running through my mind. I'm considering just cutting the line, but then it would be up to the duck to free himself...not a great option. I start flicking my stick, reeling down, then up. Move forward and then back. With all the commotion my reel develops some backlash, but I'm busy playing this darn bird and just have to let the mess be buried in the spool. I'm jerking around like a fool and the bird has gone bonkers! Suddenly, to my amazement, the duck frees himself. He is about twenty yards out and has dragged my line along with him. As I begin retrieving line, it starts moving towards the middle of the pond. When the slack is finally in, I feel some shoulders tugging on what's left. I guess it's only fair to give the duck credit for a good hook-up and a fine fish! 6 Quote

Big-O Posted July 9, 2014 Posted July 9, 2014 I was smiling as I began reading through the story but had to compose myself, after your backlash paragraph when you said... "I'm jerking around like a fool and the bird has gone bonkers!" This is one for the ages Quote
Will Wetline Posted July 9, 2014 Posted July 9, 2014 Really??!!! You need a name for this most unusual presentation. Let me suggest "The Duck Dropping Technique." Quote
STPC Posted July 10, 2014 Posted July 10, 2014 Really??!!! You need a name for this most unusual presentation. Let me suggest "The Duck Dropping Technique." I've heard of foul hooking, but Fowl Hooking is a new one by me. Quote
Super User senile1 Posted July 10, 2014 Super User Posted July 10, 2014 I don't know why but I have found that this technique works better when the bird in question is a Blue Heron. Quote

Super User roadwarrior Posted July 11, 2014 Author Super User Posted July 11, 2014 Looks like that bass had a kut tale too! I caught the same bass a couple of weeks ago and the tail was much worse. It has healed quite a bit, so I think she will survive. It appeared that she might have snipped by a turtle. Quote
