Use Baitcaster On 1/4Oz And Less Crankbaits Or Spinning Reel?

Curious. What do others throw the Rapala Scatter Rap Shad type lure with. Size 3/16 or 1/4 oz.   Went out today and  just didn't like the control using my Johnny Morris baitcaster and MH pole. (Would a medium action pole be a better fit).  I switched to my spinning reel and did okay.....but like throwing my baitcasters more often.

 

Just curious. Is the smaller non deep diving CB just not a good fit for BC reels.  Or will simply going to a med - med/light pole make the difference for me.

#5 and #7 shad raps get thrown on a MF spinning rod for me. I dont use them for bass very often, mostly walleye. There's no way you could get any sort of distance with a casting reel. They are like throwing a balloon.

Most modern day low profile BCs can cast a bait weighting less than 1/4 oz, the problem is no longer the reel, it's the line and the power rating of the rod. Want to cast lighter lures ? Use less than 10 lb test and M or les rods.

Dont have scatter rap but other small cranks 1/4 and under that I used on Johhny Morris Carbonlite reel with ML and Med rods.

I had no success at all at throwing a 3/16oz Rapala with 10# Yo Zuri Hybrid, a JDM Calcutta 50 and 6'6" ML Clarus. If I wanted throw a plug like that in the future, I would either use a spinning combo or spend a bunch on a casting combo that can do it.

The rapala shad cranks (shad rap, shallow shad rap, scatter rap) are not like most baits. I can cast a 1/4 bomber, strike king, or bandit twice as far as i can a shad rap. Even with spinning gear it can be tricky if there is any sort of wind. Like I said, its like casting a balloon.

I have a M G. Loomis Crankbait Rod I through these with sometimes but I get better distance and control with a spinning reel on a ML Fast St. Croix Avid.

A spinning rod is the obvious choice.  However,...like the OP....I prefer a baitcast reel whenever possible.  This rod is one of at least 3 rods that I use with #5 Shad Raps (3/16 oz.).  The other 2 rods are an older HMG 7' ML and an older 6'9" Light Expert.  A 4th rod that I feel certain will handle 3/16 oz. is my 6'10" MF Smallmouth, but I haven't tried it yet with that weight.  Have thrown 3/16 oz. spinnerbaits, but as we all know, spinnerbait total weight is always more than listed.  The rod is very important with light lures.  Seriously doubt you can get any kind of distance with that rod no matter what reel you put on it.  I get what I consider very good distances with all 3 rod/reel combos.  Actually better than I thought I would with these light lures.

 

All reels I am currently using for this weight are older models.  Haven't tried my Curado 51E yet, but imagine it will also handle that weight.  Still isn't a "new" model.
