Chris9999 Posted July 8, 2014 Posted July 8, 2014 I am looking for a new baitcasting reel, preferably 7.1:1. Ill be using braid on this and it will be put on a 6 1/2' MH rod. Nothing has really caught my eye yet but I am sure yall have used almost every reel out there. Any suggestions or comments are appreciated. Thanks! Quote
JGBassinAL Posted July 8, 2014 Posted July 8, 2014 ^^^ What he said. If you are looking under $200, then the Curado I, Daiwa Tatula Type R, and Lews BB1 Pro would be your best options in my opinion. I am a Shimano guy, but have at one time owned all three of these reels. I only have the Curado now, but I am kinda biased. I didn't see a significant advantage of any one of these reels over the other, they are all great reels. Edit: BTW, you can get a Tatula Type R for $130 at many places online, so if you are on a budget then that is the reel I would go for. Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted July 8, 2014 Super User Posted July 8, 2014 It's all about price. As much as I like Shimano reels, Pinnacle has brought out some new gear that is exceptional and well priced. Specifically the Optimus XLT and XiHS: http://www.pinnaclefishing.com/shop/s-5-Tournament-Class-Reels.aspx If super light is your preference, the Okuma Helios Air is one of the finest reels I have ever fished: http://www.okumafishing.com/product/view/reels/baitcast-reels-low-profile/helios-air Quote
OntarioFishingGuy Posted July 8, 2014 Posted July 8, 2014 My Tatula is shot, gears are destroyed. I would go for something else. The new Chronarch CI4 is a beast though! Quote

Super User FishTank Posted July 8, 2014 Super User Posted July 8, 2014 I checked out a Helios Air this weekend and I was blown away. In a way it reminded me of my old Daiwa Steeze but slightly better. It my be next on my radar. It has everything you could want in a reel. If you want to stay under $200, a Curado would be a no brainer. Another to consider would be the Daiwa Zillion at around $250. I love mine. Quote
OntarioFishingGuy Posted July 8, 2014 Posted July 8, 2014 Yeah, I thought it was the bearing retainer inside the side plate catching on the spool, but actually, the fears are meshing and growling, and the sound makes me sick. Like what you would expect out of a 50$ reel. I have a couple Daiwa spinning reels (Procyon, Ballistic), but the Tatula is a disappointment. Probably a fluke, but I won't be buying any more. It does cast a 1/2 oz lipless crank a mile though. Quote
Super User F14A-B Posted July 9, 2014 Super User Posted July 9, 2014 Yea, well my 87 quantum could throw a 1/2 oz trap a mile too... But you would think, that Diawa could make a bullet proof gear system for any of their reels and no matter the cost, in this day and age, but I suppose a catastrophic gear failure can take place still yet. I switched to Shimano in 07 and after 25 years with Diawa, I have had almost 0 issues with shimano and a very long list of problems with Diawa, knock on wood! 1 Quote
Chris9999 Posted July 9, 2014 Author Posted July 9, 2014 Sorry forgot to add price. Would like to stay under 200-250ish. Thanks for all the suggestions though Quote
ABW Posted July 9, 2014 Posted July 9, 2014 Lew's Tournament Pro. 150 ish on auction site Edit: If you want to use braid then I think the BB1 Pro would work better. You can get those for 150 ish aswell. Quote
IAY Posted July 9, 2014 Posted July 9, 2014 Save up another 20 dollar ish and go for Chronarch Ci4+. 1 Quote
Cgrinder Posted July 9, 2014 Posted July 9, 2014 Go used; buy a Curado/Chronarch 50E from a reputable seller and enjoy. The size 50 Shimano reels are delightful. You'll also have plenty of money left over for some "essential" upgrades like Carbontex drag washers and a Hawgtech handle. Must buy new? Flip a coin. Heads Daiwa Tatula Type R, tails Shimano Curado I. Then buy some nice cork knobs for the Tatula or handle bearings for the Curado I. Quote

TNBassin' Posted July 9, 2014 Posted July 9, 2014 Curado I or like others have suggested, a Tatula Type R. Quote
