basscody Posted July 8, 2014 Posted July 8, 2014 I'm interested in hearing what people have to say about a good monofilament line for poppers specifically. I've used 14 lb trilene in the past, and I'm currently using 14 lb Grand Slam. I've got to say I was really impressed with it at first , it floats fine and dosent stretch a whole lot. But after about a week it's started to break down a lot and getting a lot of memory In it. I'm all for maintaining line but I also don't want to continue to spend money on line that's breaking down after a week. So what seem so work good for poppers and lasts a little while? Quote
Super User Raul Posted July 8, 2014 Super User Posted July 8, 2014 Hmmm let´s see ..... I´ve been fishing for quite a while now ..... let´s say that more than 25 years ( cuz I don´t wan anybody to know how around 25 I am ) and Trilene Big Game has been in most of my reels during those years. That should mean something. 2 Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted July 8, 2014 Super User Posted July 8, 2014 Monofilament is a good choice for all treble hook lures. My favorite is Sunline Super Natural. 1 Quote
bassin is addicting Posted July 8, 2014 Posted July 8, 2014 mono.. trilene xl suffix elite and i also use Tufline Supercast..on spinning gear that i fish some topwater with....good, bad, or ugly...no issues with it..i like it because it casts a mile..and i don't lose fish because of the distance..due to the lack of stretch. Super User WRB Posted July 9, 2014 Super User Posted July 9, 2014 You have a few choices, use standard premium mono like Big Game in 1/4# spool of 15 lb test and change it after a few outings or go to high end mono like Sunline Diefer 15 lb. Tom Quote
Super User iceintheveins Posted July 9, 2014 Super User Posted July 9, 2014 Original stren, 10 pound test for small, light poppers, heavier line for bigger ones. Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted July 9, 2014 Global Moderator Posted July 9, 2014 10lb Mustad Ultraline for poppers 14lb Mustad Ultraline for walkers and buzzbaits Quote
timsford Posted July 9, 2014 Posted July 9, 2014 Big game on casting reels and trilene xl on spinning. Sunline supernatural works great when using heavier pound test because it has a lower diameter Quote
JGBassinAL Posted July 9, 2014 Posted July 9, 2014 Monofilament is a good choice for all treble hook lures. My favorite is Sunline Super Natural. X2 I use Sunline Super Natural in 20 lb for topwaters. It has the same diameter as most other 14 lb mono. Quote
Super User new2BC4bass Posted July 9, 2014 Super User Posted July 9, 2014 I've got reels with 8# and 12# Big Game. Personally I think it has more memory than Sunline Super Natural, Sufix Elite or Trilene XL. However, after a few casts when it has a chance to absorb some water, it handles quite well. I just spooled some 12# Siege on a couple rods. Handles very nice so far. There are other lines I want to try like McCoy, Maxima and Silver Thread Quote
Mike2841 Posted July 9, 2014 Posted July 9, 2014 14# sufix siege for me. Poppers and walkers. X2 but I use it in 12 lb. I like it a lot, very manageable. Quote
MikeA57 Posted July 10, 2014 Posted July 10, 2014 I've got a buddy that's fished tournaments for 40 years (and some big ones too) and he has 12 lb Big Game on almost all of his reels. He's got a few with braid/fluoro, but primarily it's all TBG. Quote
