Cable810 Posted July 7, 2014 Posted July 7, 2014 I just bought a new reel Mitchell 300 Pro specifically for fishing weed cover. I'm wondering what y'all suggest to spool the reel with Braid or Fluorocarbon? I cant seem to get many straight answers when I use my Google fu. I'm sure this has been asked MILLIONS of times. Anyone have suggestions for a rod? My current rod(on my other reel is 6'6" medium) some people suggest using a lighter rod for braid cause braid has no line give is that true? That doesn't seem like a right combo IMHO. I'm thinking either Medium or Medium Light. Thanks, Caleb Quote
Super User Catch and Grease Posted July 7, 2014 Super User Posted July 7, 2014 Flourocarbon will work fine in cover but braid will preform better in really thick cover due to strength and ability to cut through grass so efficiently. Rod is gonna depend on what your fishing and where your fishing it. Using braid doesn't mean you need a rod with give necessarily 1 Quote
Cgrinder Posted July 7, 2014 Posted July 7, 2014 Braid's good for fishing grass, weeds, pads, etc. It also behaves very well on spinning reels. If visibility is ever an issue, attach a 3' fluorocarbon leader. Boom. Versatile. 1 Quote
einscodek Posted July 7, 2014 Posted July 7, 2014 I wouldnt be worried about visibility fishing weeds so Id not use fluoro over braid for weeds.. go braid Quote
Super User F14A-B Posted July 7, 2014 Super User Posted July 7, 2014 I think most rods are built to handle braided lines nowadays. I like moderate fast tips, mostly with braid, I have a kistler spinner rod that's a fast tip for drop shot.. It's fine too Quote
Super User Chris at Tech Posted July 7, 2014 Super User Posted July 7, 2014 To me, M or ML spinning rods and weeds don't really go together. Unless your intention is to finesse fish via split-shot rig, weightless plastic, etc. If you want to get into the weeds, I'd recommend at least a MH rod and 30lb braid 1 Quote
Cable810 Posted July 8, 2014 Author Posted July 8, 2014 Mostly I'll be fishing frogs, Texas rigs and weedless worms. Guess I should have states that in the first post. Some of the lakes I fish have some fairly heveay cover. Quote
Super User Felix77 Posted July 8, 2014 Super User Posted July 8, 2014 I tend to fish a ton of weeds and here are the setups which work for me Spinning - 6'6MH - 15lb Braid, 10FC leader - Weightless senkos, light t-rigged plastics like baby brush hogs Spinning - 7' M - 15lb Braid, 8-10fc leader - Mojo Rig, Drop Shot Baitcaster - 40lb Braid - Flippin & Pitchin Baitcaster - 20lb FC - All Purpose Quote

Thanks, Caleb Assuming you are going to be throwing 3/8 oz baits and above, then a #30 8 carrier braid, such as 832, is the line of choice. If you plan to be lighter than 1/4 oz than a #20 or lighter is worth looking at. As far as rods go, when fishing heavy cover and in doubt, in my book, go Abu Garcia Veritas. My father can't into baitcasters and I have him on a Veritas MH paired to a quantum Accurist PT spinning reel as a T-rig and jig casting/pitching set up. An oz rating for baits is needed to really recommend you a rod and line to pair to that reel. Quote
Cable810 Posted July 8, 2014 Author Posted July 8, 2014 I usually stay within Rod Lure OZ specifications. I'll probably split the different and go 25lb test. Just some rods I'm looking at. I really like the split handle so something that I'd want with the rod but It wont be the end of the world if I can't get it. It also has to have cork handles ever since I went to cork I can't go back... Bass Pro Shops Bionic Blade XPS Micro Abu Garcia Veritas Daiwa Procyon Quote

Cable810 Posted July 8, 2014 Author Posted July 8, 2014 Now what rod length?? I got the rod narrowed down just need to decide on length. My current rod is a 6'6" and I'm debating on another 6'6" rod or 7'. The longer the rod the greater the casting distance is and its personal preference too on length. Suggestions? Quote
Cable810 Posted July 9, 2014 Author Posted July 9, 2014 So I ordered my rod and other things. I went with the Abu Garcia Veritas 7'MH and Sufix 832 20lb camo braid. Quote
Super User SoFlaBassAddict Posted July 9, 2014 Super User Posted July 9, 2014 IMO 20 pound is just too light for a casting reel. It tends to dig into itself because of the diameter. the smallest I use on casting reels is 30. For the most part though I go with 50 unless it's for flipping/pinching gear. Rod length is a personal choice really. As long as it fits into the power and action that you're looking for. Quote
Cable810 Posted July 9, 2014 Author Posted July 9, 2014 I don't use Bait casting reels only Spinning. Quote
Super User SoFlaBassAddict Posted July 9, 2014 Super User Posted July 9, 2014 Aah. Missed that part. You should be good to go then. Quote
Super User iceintheveins Posted July 9, 2014 Super User Posted July 9, 2014 Light to moderate weeds = mono or fluoro (unless frogs then it's braid only) Heavy weeds or where you need to punch = 65 pound braid. Quote
