Jraut98 Posted July 6, 2014 Posted July 6, 2014 Is it ok to use a spinning rod when frog fishing or do you need a bait caster and what pound test should I use Quote
Paul s Posted July 6, 2014 Posted July 6, 2014 Yeah its fine ive done it before, make sure you have a medium to medium heavy rod, I would use at the very least 15 pound braid and go higher from there, depending on how thick the cover is you are fishing. 1 Quote
CJV Posted July 6, 2014 Posted July 6, 2014 I personally would not frog on spinning gear .... Sounds like a disaster waiting to happen. Quote
Arv Posted July 6, 2014 Posted July 6, 2014 I've seen it done before and it worked fine. Not my choice but if you get the right equipment it should be doable Quote
ColdSVT Posted July 6, 2014 Posted July 6, 2014 I did it for years as a kid with a medium lightning rod and a shimano symetre...even used mono...then braid started becomming more common and i went to 20lb fireline...worked fine Quote

This is my set up for frogs any thing else I fish in cover, open water it's 10# braid and ml rod. Spinning can be used for anything you want. Quote
Super User BassinLou Posted July 6, 2014 Super User Posted July 6, 2014 Is it ok to use a spinning rod when frog fishing or do you need a bait caster and what pound test should I use Like others have mentioned, it can be done. Many fish frogs with it with a spinner. But is it for me? No. A b/c imho is better tool for frogging applications. Quote
long island basser Posted July 6, 2014 Posted July 6, 2014 Is it ok to use a spinning rod when frog fishing or do you need a bait caster and what pound test should I use I've been doing this for many years and have had no problems at all. I use a MH rod and 40 lb power pro braid. 1 Quote
Super User Jeff H Posted July 6, 2014 Super User Posted July 6, 2014 My youngest son (12 yrs old) still uses a spinning rig for his frogs. Pflueger Trion 35 reel on a 6' MH Lightning Rod w/30 lb Fireline. More often than not he whups me and does a darn fine job working that frog....better than me. 1 Quote
Kevin22 Posted July 6, 2014 Posted July 6, 2014 Spinning gear just isnt built tough enough for me to be comfortable using it for frogs. The exception would be in open water, weed edges, and sparse weeds. Quote
Super User flyfisher Posted July 6, 2014 Super User Posted July 6, 2014 No issues at all. I have used both M and MH rods for frogs with 30lb braid and have had no issues. 2 Quote
Mr_Scrogg Posted July 7, 2014 Posted July 7, 2014 What ^^ Said. I toss Horny Toads on a Medium Spinning rod with 30lb braid. Just dont think you are going to muscle a PB out of thick slop, be prepared to go to him if need be. 1 Quote
VolFan Posted July 7, 2014 Posted July 7, 2014 Simple answer is yes, and you should size the rod/reel/line to the cover you'll be fishing. A MH to H Bionic Blade from BPS is a good budget option for the rod. That and a decent 2500 or 3000 size spinning reel with 30 or so lb braid and you're good for all but the thickest stuff. Quote
thehooligan Posted July 7, 2014 Posted July 7, 2014 I used to throw buzzbaits and frogs on a medium heavy cumara, 1000 size sustain with 20lb braid. Works fine, just prefer a baitcaster for it now. Quote
Super User Master Bait'r Posted July 7, 2014 Super User Posted July 7, 2014 As long as that spinning reel has a massive drag it should be fine. You really just want to be able to set that big double frog hook and the drags/retrieve speeds on BC reels are better suited to that for the most part. That doesn't mean you can't do it though, so just find one that has a big stinky drag and roll with it on a MH rod with some backbone and 30lb SX1. You'll be fine. Quote
tugsandpulls Posted July 7, 2014 Posted July 7, 2014 you can do anything you want on spinning gear i use to only use spinning gear but now i only use bc Quote
dave Posted July 7, 2014 Posted July 7, 2014 Nothing but spinning tackle on guide boats targeting bass and snakeheads in the spadderdock and hydrilla. 30# braid, 6-1/2' - 7' MH rods. The toughest thing for most clients is flipping the bail with the left hand, picking up slack and getting the toad on top quickly. Once they get it, no issues at all. We typically are actually IN the pads with a push pole so, we go get typically go get the fish. Quote
georgeyew Posted July 7, 2014 Posted July 7, 2014 I just came back from a guided trip on Okeechobee. Our guide had some Gloomis heavy action spinning rods with 50 lb braid. That would be sufficient for frog fishing. Quote
bassin is addicting Posted July 7, 2014 Posted July 7, 2014 simple answer...is..yes.. as my frog setup.. i have used a MH rod (a Veritas now), Pflueger Supreme and 20-30lb braid for years and had zero problems yes..a BC setup is gonna be said to be "best"...but, it can...and has, been done with a spinning setup with no problems.
