Chris-W Posted July 6, 2014 Posted July 6, 2014 Hey guys! I most frequently have the opportunity to fish between the hours of 2-5pm right now (Summer in GA). The lake that I usually fish is a neighborhood lake (approx 12ft+ at deepest) with a few docks, nice thick grass banks, no lily pads but can definitely hear frogs at night, fairly stained water and it's stocked with 1-7lb largemouth bass. There is one bank that stays shaded all day due to tree cover, and there happens to be a deeper channel off that bank as well so it's been a favorite spot. What are everyone's top 3 producing lures/rigs for midday (2-5pm) summer bass fishing? Please provide the brands/colors/weights and presentations that have been most successful for you. Thanks in advance! Quote

Chris-W Posted July 6, 2014 Author Posted July 6, 2014 What squarebill do you like (brand/color)? If max depth is 12' do I want to get one that goes right around that depth? Thanks! Quote
Chris-W Posted July 6, 2014 Author Posted July 6, 2014 Any favorite color on the rattle trap or deep crankbaits? Do I want to just target the deepest spot of the lake with the deep crankbait or work the banks and back towards the middle of the lake? Quote

Super User Catch and Grease Posted July 6, 2014 Super User Posted July 6, 2014 What squarebill do you like (brand/color)? If max depth is 12' do I want to get one that goes right around that depth? Thanks! You want to get a crank that goes at what ever depth the fish are! I normally only use square bills shallow with lures that dive 3-5 feet but I know some people use bigger ones like the one bomber makes that dives 10+I have a few and they work good but I don't normally fish lakes too deep. The H20 CRS and KVD 1.5 are my favorite squarebills, for colors I could go on and on and on but my 2 favorites right now are probably chartreuse black back and gizzard shad 1 Quote

Chris-W Posted July 6, 2014 Author Posted July 6, 2014 Thanks ATX. I'm brand new to jig fishing and don't know where to start! What style (football, swim, etc) is most versatile, what weight is most common and what trailer would you recommend if there are no craws in the lake? Weed guard or no? Favorite brand/color? Thank you! Quote

Kevin22 Posted July 6, 2014 Posted July 6, 2014 I love me some square bills but they are an early morning late evening bait unless its cloudy out. If its calm I like to walk a topwater. But if its really hot and they are avoiding the sun, it will be a t-rigged craw or tube fished along the edges of the weed lines and flipped into shaded spots. Quote
ColdSVT Posted July 6, 2014 Posted July 6, 2014 1 heavy jig or t rig 2 sk 6xd 3 hollow frog or sammy 1 Quote
ATX Posted July 7, 2014 Posted July 7, 2014 Depending on how the fish should be feeding is how I start deciding what size jig. If it's summer time and they are chasing I'll use a small plastic grub and a fast sinking jig. Cold water sluggish bass I use a bulky plastic to slow down the sink rate. Football jigs when dragging on the bottom, swim jigs working over grass or just under the surface and punching/grass jigs when in thick veg mats. If the water is clear and bite is slow, I down size everything. Add far as the brand, there is no loyalty here, I just want to sink the hook, so wide gap heavy hooks in grass and light wire for a finesse bite. I do fish non skirted jigs with just about any plastic grub, worm, swim bait, jerk bait or creature bait made. It took me years to grab a jig over tx rig, but don't be a dummy like me! Tx rig has its place but to me a jig is much more versatile. More specific to your question, 3/8s green pumpkin football jig with a small black twin tailed grub will catch a baas anywhere. 1 Quote
TheSmilingSwordsman Posted July 7, 2014 Posted July 7, 2014 1. H2O Express Squarebill in Bluegill (I fish clear water) 2. Zoom Super Fluke in Baitfish, White Ice or Watermelon 3. T-rigged Zoom Brush Hog in Watermelon 4. Siebert Dredge Football Head Jig with a pumpkin colored craw trailer. Between these four, I have yet to be skunked this summer. Be patient and let the fish tell you what they want. No lure works 100% of the time. 1 Quote
