Super User new2BC4bass Posted July 6, 2014 Super User Posted July 6, 2014 Tonight I spooled my new T3 1016 SHL that I bought the first of April from TW with some 12# Siege. Spooled a Curado 51E I bought used about 1-1/2 years ago with 8# Siege. Mounted a Fuego that I've had for at least 3 years on a new Ballistic cranking rod I bought over the winter. The Fuego already had line on it upon arrival. I sprayed some KVD L&L conditioner on it before putting it in the car tonight. Ate out. Went to the river. While walking down to the river I tried to adjust the spool tension on the T3. Doesn't work. :mad5: Even with Maxbrake and 6 on the dial casting without overruns was a chore. Put it up and grabbed the 51E. Tried to open the side cover to see how many brakes were on. Couldn't. Double :mad5: :mad5: All the brakes must be on because I was only getting about 2/3rds the distance I should have been getting. The handle to release the side cover turns hard. When I got home I tried my other 51E. Cover popped open on its own as soon as I turned the handle to the Open position. Okay lets try the Fuego. Overrun. Second cast line stopped short. Pulled on it and it was sticking to itself. Guess the line must have been sitting on the reel for awhile before I got it. Max brake on the dial and spool tension set to where the rod had to be shook in order to give line allowed me to cast without overruns. What the..................!!! I know this isn't right as I have 2 other Fuegos I bought when TW had them on closeout. As it turned out the Fuego got better as I cast with it. After about 20-25 minutes it was down to where the spool kept turning after the lure hit the water. Yes I know this is looser than what is always suggested, but it is how I normally run my spool tension. I normally set the tension only tight enough to remove side-to-side play. Brake was down to 6 with no overruns. Now we're starting to get somewhere. One good reel out of 3 is not what I call a good percentage. I know I should send the T3 back to TW, but if the problem is something minor, I would rather have it gone through by a professional so that it would be properly cleaned and lubed. I am not going to deal with the seller of the 51E because it has been so long since I bought it. Should I send it to Shimano or is the problem something a professional could repair for me? Or should I get a bigger hammer? Quote
Super User F14A-B Posted July 6, 2014 Super User Posted July 6, 2014 Change you're approach to gear, check it out completely no matter when it's acquired, this will go along way to catching problems in a timely fashion learn from this now, and I do wish you luck in the repairs of you're reels!, Quote
Mr_Scrogg Posted July 6, 2014 Posted July 6, 2014 X2 I ALWAYS go through used and new reels to make sure they are up to snuff. Even had some used TD Advantages shipped straight to Mike at DVT when I bought them. I had a Stradic CI4 that felt tight, almost binding. Took it back immediately and got a replacement. Id get a replacement for the T3, and send the other 2 to DVT for a good cleaning and once over. Quote
Super User iabass8 Posted July 6, 2014 Super User Posted July 6, 2014 Make sure there are the 2 shims in the cast control cap on your T3. Mine always fall out when I break them down to clean them. Perhaps set the dial to a number greater than 6. there are 20 settings on the dial. 6 would be equivalent to roughly 3 on your fuego. You really don't need to put much force at all into casting the 1016. It's insane how effortless I can pitch a bait as far as I do. As for the 51e, if you decide not to send it in, i'll gladly take it off your hands before the hammer does. Heck, I'll even pay the shipping! Quote
Super User Tywithay Posted July 6, 2014 Super User Posted July 6, 2014 I would remove the sideplate from the T3 and make sure that both the magnets and spool inductor are functioning properly. If the inductor isn't sliding on the spool shaft, the brakes won't function throughout the cast. Quote

If I had to pick one brand to be a fan of, it would be Daiwa. However, I do love my Curado 51E. I bought the first one new, and had it sent right to DVT for cleaning before I ever used it. I do hope you realize I was shooting for humor with the hammer comment. Quote

If the inductor isn't sliding on the spool shaft, the brakes won't function throughout the cast. Am I going to void the warranty if I do that? I ordered a set of Wiha Precision Screwdrivers for working on my reels, but I'm pretty sure if I accidentally mar a screw (or anything else) taking the cover off, Daiwa could claim the warranty is void because the reel was worked on. Super User Tywithay Posted July 6, 2014 Super User Posted July 6, 2014 No. Warranty will be fine. You don't really have to work on it. There's no screw to remove the cover. Just spin the mag dial and make sure that the magnets are turning. As far as the inductor, you can move it with your hands to make sure it's not sticking anywhere along the shaft. If either aren't working, I'd get it replaced. Quote
Super User Raul Posted July 6, 2014 Super User Posted July 6, 2014 2 reels that "don't work" .... It's you. Quote
Super User new2BC4bass Posted July 6, 2014 Author Super User Posted July 6, 2014 2 reels that "don't work" .... It's you. Not likely my friend. I have absolutely no problems with my other 39. EDIT: If you had read through my posts, you would have learned this is my 2nd 51E and 3rd 1016. I think I know how to work a cast control by now and how to remove the side cover on a centrifugal reel so I can adjust the brakes. You would have also learned that the side cover on my other 51E popped off on its own when I turned the key. I have absolutely no desire to work on reels, but that doesn't mean you should assume I am an idiot. Neither of those operations require a rocket scientist to adjust. Quote
Super User smalljaw67 Posted July 6, 2014 Super User Posted July 6, 2014 Man, I'm sorry about that but the problem with the T3 is why they are getting discontinued. They work well but they also had an incredible amount of problems for a $400+ reel, and while there are lemons with every brand of reel the T3 had much more than you would expect. I've heard some tackle repair guys say that the reel was rushed, not just to production but through production as reels have been coming in with all kinds of problems. I wanted to get one and I was told by a local repair guy to save my money, he said it is a great reel but there is such a large percentage with problems that I may not be lucky enough to avoid and with my luck, I'll pass. Super User iabass8 Posted July 6, 2014 Super User Posted July 6, 2014 Im up to 6. No issues either Quote
Super User smalljaw67 Posted July 6, 2014 Super User Posted July 6, 2014 Guess I got the wrong ones. All 4 of mine have been flawless. I was told that they are good reels by a guy that is an authorized warranty repair for Daiwa in my area and he was the one who told me they discontinued them earlier than what was expected due to a high percentage of problems. Yes, you got 4 good ones and no problems, every brand has lemons and while I have only experienced 1 brand that failed on me (Shimano Symetre) I thought it was worth telling New2BC4Bass what an authorized repair shop told me and that was there are a high percentage of reels with problems in this particular line. I was also told that on normal production you expect less than 3% return due to material or workmanship defects, on higher end models like the Steez or the T# it is supposed to be less than 1% but the T3 have more than tripled the return rate of the Steez. It is just like guys saying the Quantum Smoke is junk and theirs fell apart, I have 2 that are better than my Revo Premier 2nd generation, well actually the 150 is better, the 100 is as good as my premier. It wasn't meant for you to take exception, it was meant that some of these have a problem, I'm happy you got good stuff. Quote
