What's the best line to use where bass are anywhere from 1-12 pounds. I also want to know what line should I use for distance and still be able to catch the big ones

I use a combination of brands of fishing line.

My best overall brand has been Excaliber Silver Thread Copolymere Line.

Just adjust your drag to the test of the line your using. I caught my PB of 10# using 8# silver thread.

I caught a snapping turtle the size of my jeep 235-15 tire. With the same 8# test. I winched him in.

Yozuri hybrid copolymer

Vicious copolymer.

I'm very old fashioned in my fishing ways when it comes to the test of the line I'm using.

With crankbaits 8# test. Shallow to mid running.

With deeper running cranks and topwater it's 10# to 12# test.

My spinnerbaits it's 8# test 1/4oz.

Spinnerbaits 1/8 - 3/16#   6# test.

Carolina rig 17# test.

Jigs 14# test lighter stuff. Heavier 20# test.

But it varies to where I'm fishing. New places I go heavy. In thick weeds go heat and set your drag tight you have to have power to keep its head up.

All else being equal a lighter line will cast further than a heavier line.  To the best of my knowledge the type of line has no bearing on distance.  I'm sure some will disagree with me on that statement.  I have a feeling some will say braid casts further.  I've made some pretty long casts with my STX Gen 1, 40# braid and a 3/4 oz. spoon, but my Zillion 50th Anniversary with 12# Sufix Elite has also bombed a 3/4 oz. spinnerbait so far I probably would have had a hard time setting the hook had a fish hit it at that distance.

If you are going for maximum distance, then a braid would be better IMO because of its no stretch.  It would allow for a good hookset.....provided there wasn't too much bow in the line.

Rather than looking for a line that will cast far, you would be better off looking for a long rod that would zing lures way out there.  Some reels are better than others for long distance casting.  Try a search....both here and on TackleTour.  I know there are a couple threads about the longest casting reels on TT.  Many of those mentioned are beyond my budget.

Having said all this I want to point out that great casting distances are seldom needed or wanted.  Better to get a little closer.  Accuracy is a much better goal.  Here again the rod will be the most important of the three...rod, reel and line....which of course all fall behind the importance of the person's ability that is making the cast.

There are plenty of lines that would handle 1-12 pound bass.  More important would be the cover you are fishing in.  No way will I use 8# line when throwing into the lily pads, but I use it all the time when cover is sparse and I am using a Medium power rod.

15# braid is going to break over 20#, a 3000 spinning reel on a mh rod is going to have enough backbone and cranking power for about any bass.

I use 10# Seauguar Red label for cranks and jigs. I fish open water though. Very little cover.
