Depends what you get. I have some of those Columbia shirts pictured. Agreed that they dont breathe all that well. I usually wear them during cloudy days or cooler weather. When its hot out the airgill shirts get the nod. Those are cooler than exposed skin. They're pretty expensive though but worth it.

I have tried the Columbia shirts and they are ok.  They don't tend to breath well.  I have one from Royal Robbins I like that is vented vertically down the back .  The vent is hidden in the back but if you move your shoulders back and forth it creates a breeze. 

 

My all time favorite fish shirts are from Exofficio.  I like the Breezr and Baja shirt with Bug A Way.  The work great and breath well.  The arm pits, back and sides are vented.  Down side to these shirts is the price.  I have 2 and purchased both on clearance. Otherwise, they are way out of my price range.

I've tried several brands of shirts. I just got some new Omni Freeze SHORT sleeve (Columbia). It was in the mid to upper 90s today and it worked great.

Here is my tip: get short sleeve shirts and then wear the Columbia sun sleeves. (Or other brands)

This gives ventilation to up to your shoulders. But still protects your arms.

I wear a wide brim hat, Omni freeze shirts, sun sleeves, buff/gaiter and gloves. I also wear thin pants rather than shorts. It makes a difference in how I feel after I get off the water.

Based on some of the posts I am in the minority. I fish with Columbia PFG long sleeves and I enjoy them. They keep me cool and shield me from the sun. Works for me. 

Agree, but mine don't last very long.

It was a day with temps in the mid 90s, when I realized that I was cooler in a long-sleeved polyester shirt,

than I'd be in a short-sleeved cotton shirt, which I used to wear.

I fish in hot humid weather and find that an oversized white cotton long sleeve t-shirt is the coolest most comfortable and usually cheapest protection from sun and heat. I do have some of the tech shirts, but the cotton t-shirts seem to keep my a bit cooler.

I use bothe the button up and moisture wicking. Leaning toward the moisture wicking as my favorite. Here's the one I currently use.

Usually if I'm out on the water and there's a slight breeze, I won't even sweat when I'm wearing my Columbia PFG's and that's in the hot Orlando weather...

 

There's a little tackle shop down in Key West called Key West Bait and Tackle and they got me hooked on OHO. Old Harbor Outfitters. Their shirts are good stuff, a little thicker than the PFGs but breath more. They have an website that y'all might want to check out. This tackle shop just switched to a new brand called TASC and I have one of these shirts in my possession but have yet to wear it out yet. Feels more like the PFGs.

I have the black omni freeze long sleeve zip up neck.

Love it.

Was in upper 80s with no wind a couple weeks ago. I was nice and cool. If I got warm I unzipped. At one point a small storm cell passed and I zipped up and stayed warm.

As has been stated, cotton holds water...which is why you don't wear it in winter unless your goal is hypothermia! Also white cotton doesn't protect you completely from the sun, especially if it gets wet or sweaty.
