OroBass Posted July 4, 2014 Posted July 4, 2014 How long do you guys fish? It's not unusual for me to fish sun up to sundown for bass. When I sturgeon fish we stay on the water for up to 3 days! How many of you only fish a few hours at a time vs pulling all night ears etc. Quote
STPC Posted July 4, 2014 Posted July 4, 2014 Wow! You must definitely be single. I get a few hours, or minutes, at a time before the wife needs me to do something. Count yourself lucky to be able to spend that much time on the water. 1 Quote
OroBass Posted July 4, 2014 Author Posted July 4, 2014 I'm an addict. I pack a lunch and spend my entire day off on the water. Some days I'll fish be for or afterror work as well. 2 Quote
Super User Catch and Grease Posted July 4, 2014 Super User Posted July 4, 2014 Man, I had to take a double take on the title lol During the summer I'm usually fishing from before sunrise till I get tired of the heat and I head in which is usually like 6 hours but sometimes if I'm doing good I'll stay a little longer. Quote
OroBass Posted July 4, 2014 Author Posted July 4, 2014 Nice! Glad to hear I'm not crazy. I've had days were the bite will be great at say 7 am then die but turn back on at 3 pm and so on. Quote
Super User Jrob78 Posted July 4, 2014 Super User Posted July 4, 2014 Anywhere from 4 hrs to sun up to sun down. Usually closer to 4 or 5 hrs in the heat of the summer. Quote
jignfule Posted July 4, 2014 Posted July 4, 2014 When we get a chance to get out this time of year 10-14 hours on the water isn't a rarity. In a 100 degree heat it can wear on you. (only if the fish aren't biting) 1 Quote
Super User slonezp Posted July 4, 2014 Super User Posted July 4, 2014 I like to get off the water before the crowds start. 1 Quote
tholmes Posted July 5, 2014 Posted July 5, 2014 Due to some health issues, I'm only good for ~3 hrs. or so. If it's really hot, maybe only 2 hrs. I just can't do those "all day in the boat" trips anymore. Tom Quote
Super User Jar11591 Posted July 5, 2014 Super User Posted July 5, 2014 I'll stay out ALL day if I have nothing going on. Today I fished 5 am until 3:30 pm, so 10.5 hours. Would have stayed longer, but my dog was by herself. If the fish are biting, you can't get me off the water, unless your name is lightening. Quote
Super User flyfisher Posted July 5, 2014 Super User Posted July 5, 2014 All depends on what all i have going on that day. I haven't found too many days to be that productive when i am on the water 12-14 hours unless they involve a good bit of paddling. I get to for whatever time i can and have spent a few hours walking the bank of a local pond or wading a stream for smallies. If I am fishing for brookies in the mountains, that is generally an all day affair and I usually end up hiking out by headlamp. 1 Quote
joeeagles36 Posted July 5, 2014 Posted July 5, 2014 usually 4 to 8 hours if its hot sometimes longer. I also pull all nighters for them big cats and crappie. depends if im catching them. I take the boat after work and and atleast 2or 3 days a week I go for atleast a hour before work on shore. Quote
Super User F14A-B Posted July 5, 2014 Super User Posted July 5, 2014 We used to do 16 hr days on orange/ cross creek / Lochloosa in summer/ 12 hrs on St. John's river.. I was a younger man then... Now, I hire guides and do 4 hrs. And at home anywhere from a hour to 4 Kentucky lake are about 8 hrs. I can't do those super days or nights anymore. Rejoice o young man in thy youth... That's the truth... Lol!!! 1 Quote
Super User geo g Posted July 5, 2014 Super User Posted July 5, 2014 I don't ever fish for more than 4 hours, but I do it at least 6 days a week. 1 Quote
Super User Oregon Native Posted July 5, 2014 Super User Posted July 5, 2014 Since had the pancreatitus I'm back to getting better an better....up to about 8 or 9 hours now... was only two for a long time. Like fishing dawn to dark, especially back in the ol days when fishin lots of tourneys. Remember once fishing San Diego bay when I was in service. Fished 24 hours just so could see the different tide changes and what they brought. Tight Lines Quote
Loop_Dad Posted July 5, 2014 Posted July 5, 2014 I've recently moved from California to Texas. It is not just hot but humid. I do not see myself enjoying fishing all day in this climate. A lot of locals fish night time this time of the year. Also good fishing lake here gets so busy with wakeboarders. Because of these, my current pattern is to fish from 5 or 6a to 10a, so I get my fishing before the heat and traffic. Back when I was in California I used to fish 6-8 hours. Quote
Super User SoFlaBassAddict Posted July 5, 2014 Super User Posted July 5, 2014 This time of the year, I try to get out prior to the sun coming over the horizon. It's way to hot and humid to be out in the middle of the day though. If the fishing is absolutely phenomenal, I'll deal with the heat. Otherwise I'm generally heading back home around mid day. Quote
Super User SirSnookalot Posted July 5, 2014 Super User Posted July 5, 2014 Everyday day my fishing starts at the ocean, no compromise on that ever. Everything I do is seasonal fishing, from the areas I fish to target species to time of day that I leave and come home. This time of year I do no bass fishing, the bite is slow, hot and humid, insects and sun intensity. January thru March I get offshore a bit more, that's sailfish time with the rough water. March thru June I do jettie fishing, and it's the beach from July til the end of the year, that's inshore at it's best here. In October with the weather cooling I'm fishing salt in the mornings and bass in the afternoons, after March I get much less bass fishing in, but I target peacocks until about the end of June. There is no set script I follow as to the amount time invested each outing, the bite controls my time. Quote
papajoe222 Posted July 5, 2014 Posted July 5, 2014 I stay out as long as I plan to and sometimes longer. If I have only four hours free, I'll be ouit the whole four. If I go night fishing, sundown to just after sunup is the norm. When I'm on vacation the little time I spend off the water is to sleep. The longest I've gone is just under 13 hours, but that was when I was young and spry. Now if I go out for ten hours, I'm usually ready for a nap. Quote
Josh Smith Posted July 5, 2014 Posted July 5, 2014 It really depends. I would prefer to stay out all day, and have, but when I take my boy or the fish aren't biting, I tend to come in after two or three hours. I need to take a mini-vacation and use the time the fish aren't biting to throw out some live bait and cook up some food; just stay out all day like that. Josh Quote
TNBassin' Posted July 5, 2014 Posted July 5, 2014 Longest I've ever fished was around 14 hours. When we got off the boat, it felt like I still out on the water for a few hours afterwards. Now my average is around 5-7 hours, though with work being a PITA I haven't been in weeks. Killing me. Quote
Super User Catt Posted July 5, 2014 Super User Posted July 5, 2014 My grandson & I go twice a week usually from first light until 10 am. I still can fish 10-12 hours straight but then my back is toast for 2-3 days. I have been known to fish 18-20 hours straight but was 20 years ago! Quote
