flyingmonkie Posted July 4, 2014 Posted July 4, 2014 The LMB in my neighborhood pond love a weightless soft plastic, but with the water warming up, they are far out and deep. It's hard enough to get a cast out that far, and even harder to constantly wait for the plastic to sink into the strike zone. So I came up with this: I can't recall seeing it before, so I'm tentatively calling it the "Jerk Shot"... other contenders are the "Drop Jerk", "Dropolina Rig", and the "C-Dazzle". I've only got about an hour of use with it so far, but the results have been phenomenal. I'm using a 1/2 our 5/8 ounce weight, EWG hook, three-way swivel, and braid mainline with mono leaders. To retrieve, I keep the line tight and use quick cranks of the reel to "jerk" the line with a similar cadence to traditional soft jerkbait fishing. Best response has been to a fluke and trick work; I have high hopes for a senko too, both t-rigged and wacky. Hook sets are a bit tricky, as you lose sensitivity with the two leaders... bites feel sluggish. Surely I'm not the first to try this? Any others? Quote
livetofish28 Posted July 4, 2014 Posted July 4, 2014 I have made catfish rigs like that but never thought of doing that for bass. I'm going to have to try that Tight lines Andrew 1 Quote
Super User Scott F Posted July 4, 2014 Super User Posted July 4, 2014 They call it the Wolf River rig in Wisconsin. It's a common walleye rig also known as a 3 Way rig. 1 Quote

flyingmonkie Posted July 4, 2014 Author Posted July 4, 2014 Yeah, I've done some Googling and the 3way rig is the closest thing I've found. I've also used something similar for catfish, but never for bass, and never with a retrieve like this. I'm anxious to get out and there and try it some more. If worked right, the action of the bait should be very similar to that when fished with the traditional method… the bait just stays a foot or two off the bottom. Quote
FrankW Posted July 4, 2014 Posted July 4, 2014 We used this rig back in the 50's for Steelhead. Frank Quote
Kevin22 Posted July 4, 2014 Posted July 4, 2014 Its a 3-way rig, been used since the 40's and 50's for steelhead, catfish, and walleye. Exactly how you have it pictured. Quote
Kevin22 Posted July 4, 2014 Posted July 4, 2014 By the way, with the way you have it you will not be able to cast it. It will tangle every time. You need the weighted section shorter than the hook, or the leader to the hook really short (5-6"). Unless you plan to vertical troll it, the rig will lay down in the water and the hook will wrap around the weight's leader every time you move it. Its just not going to work the way you have it rigged. Quote
Super User Maxximus Redneckus Posted July 5, 2014 Super User Posted July 5, 2014 Whats the best 3 way swivel made? Quote
bassguytom Posted July 5, 2014 Posted July 5, 2014 I use that rig to drag small crankbaits along the bottom in cold water. If you try it I think you will find the results very surprising. Quote
OntarioFishingGuy Posted July 5, 2014 Posted July 5, 2014 Whats the best 3 way swivel made? The thundermist lures T-turn is very good and tangle free. Quote

Kevin22 Posted July 5, 2014 Posted July 5, 2014 Alright. Well, I've been doing that since I first started fishing about 20 years ago with my father. I've tried your rig many times and never had it work out. Works fantastic rigged the proper way with a 12" leader to the weight and an 18-24" leader to the bait though. Quote
jtharris3 Posted July 5, 2014 Posted July 5, 2014 Whats the best 3 way swivel made? Look at the T-Turn by Thundermist lures. This would be a great application for that swivel. The T-Turn will help eliminate line twisting around the other drop. Edit: I see OntarioFishingGuy had the same suggestion. Great minds think alike! Quote
primetime Posted July 5, 2014 Posted July 5, 2014 I use 3 way for teasers in front of Floating Jerkbaits and dropshots like in picture..I add some sort of small float to nose of bait alot if using larger plastic, and if using heavy line I use a Jig or Football Jighead with a yum mighty craw or Rage Craw on bottom while I drag or lift and drop... good for power shotting.......use 1 ounce jig, shorter leader, and small 3" Reaper, works great Quote
Super User F14A-B Posted July 5, 2014 Super User Posted July 5, 2014 Yea it's not new, but it appears it is new to you, keep tinkering, it's fun and you can come up with some cool rigs! Nice work and enjoy it! Quote
Hogsticker Posted July 5, 2014 Posted July 5, 2014 It's also used fishing for Chinook with Herring on the Oregon Coast. Ten to twelve ounce lead ball Quote
flyingmonkie Posted July 5, 2014 Author Posted July 5, 2014 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=miPDqSUxvuM Well, I'll be! This has the weight leader shorter like Kevin22 mentions. Quote

Avalonjohn44 Posted July 5, 2014 Posted July 5, 2014 That's how I rig my squid when I'm salt water fishing. Quote
