pbizzle Posted July 4, 2014 Posted July 4, 2014 I took apart one of my first gen Orra SX's for a much needed deep clean. Well the first time I put it back together I had a problem with reel not engaging after I turned the handle. I would push down the thumb bar to disengage the reel, and when I turned the handle to engage the reel the thumb bar would not come back up. So after that I took it all apart, and put it back together from the frame. Now my clutch works (thumb bar will come up after turning the reel handle), but my spool won't revolve after I turn the reel handle. I tried tightening the drag down and that didn't work. I thought maybe that the drag washers got some grease on there, so I took them out and it still hasn't made a difference. I don't really know what to do. Basically whenever I turn the reel handle there's no resistance and my spool won't rotate. It's like I have no drag pressure and my reel is constantly in free spool. If anyone has any ideas as of what I can do PLEASE reply. I'm sure DVT can give me some advice. Also I should mention I had to do this without any schematics. I know it was a really bad idea, but I bought a display model for $60 and got one out of a bet so neither one came with them. Quote
masterbass Posted July 4, 2014 Posted July 4, 2014 Check a couple of things 1) spool tension or 2) the release mechanism may still be engaged so you have to take it apart again and re-engage the thumb bar mechanism. I may not be giving a good description, but this happened to me once. Quote

I keep my spool tension VERY loose when I'm casting, but I only notice the effects when my reel is in freespool. Right now my reel is acting like it's in freespool even though it's disengaged. Quote

I think I understand what your saying but it appears that your terminology is making your post a little hard to follow. Disengaged is when you have the thumb bar pushed down and the reel is in free spool Engaged is when you have turned the handle and spool is turning. One easy thing to check is to make sure you have re installed the two tension washers correctly, they should be like this ( ) or this ) ( they will not work like this ) ). It could be several things and without seeing the reel it is going to be hard to tell you what is wrong. Get a copy of the schematics and study it closely, you may be able to figure it out yourself, if not there is always DVT. 1 Quote

pbizzle Posted July 4, 2014 Author Posted July 4, 2014 Hey everybody I just fixed it! It was a really stupid mistake. What happened is that I put my pinion yoke in upside down, so the pinion gear didn't align with the main drive gear. Really stupid mistake on my part, but my reel hasn't ever felt as nice as I does after all the maintenance I've done to it. 1 Quote
Smallmouth Hunter Posted July 4, 2014 Posted July 4, 2014 Sounds to me like you didn't seat your yoke and pinion gear correctly.. Take the handle sideplate off, and pull out slowly the pinion gear. The spool should still be in the reel. The yoke and yoke spring should come out with the pinion. Now reassemble it in this order onto the two cylinders that are sticking out: Yoke first, the side that has the small slanted indents goes down While you are sliding that piece, fit the pinion gear in too. Slide all of that stuff down and make sure the gear teeth mesh. Now put the two springs on. Quote
Super User F14A-B Posted July 4, 2014 Super User Posted July 4, 2014 Good job hanging tuff to fix, with some good folks trying to steer ya! Glad it's fixed now!! 1 Quote
Kevin22 Posted July 4, 2014 Posted July 4, 2014 Pull up the schematics online (mikes reel repair probably has it) and take it apart part by part following the schematics to make sure it was put together properly. If you don't find what's wrong.. put it back together following the schematics and I'm sure you will get it. NEVER EVER take apart a reel without the schematics on the computer screen in front of you. I just fixed a reel a little bit ago that I had put together wrong years ago. Been on the shelf because it was "broken", so I decided to see what was wrong. I had a part in backwards, only reason I found it was because of the schematic in front of me. Quote

Oh but they are always availible online! by taking a little effort to find it.... http://www.abugarcia.com/support/reel-schematics?field_schem_numb_value=Orra+SX Tight Lines! Quote
