mzhammer Posted July 3, 2014 Posted July 3, 2014 Hey guys, New member here. I've owned a few curados and really enjoyed them and had the opportunity to purchase a gently used Calais for a steal. I sent it off to Shimano for a spa-day and it came back cleaned and oiled. This season was my first chance to use it and I'm unsure if I'm using it correctly. The CL200 has the line guide recessed in the frame, as opposed to the newer reels where it's flush, and when I feed my line through the guide it actually has to drop down to exit the reel, causing the line to rub against the frame as it is retrieved. The picture I've attached illustates this point somewhat. As the line exits the guide it rubs against the top of the golden-colored insert of the frame. It makes noise as I retrieve and Im worried it will affect the durability of the line. Any suggestions or is this normal? The reel is not overspooled. Quote
Super User Dwight Hottle Posted July 3, 2014 Super User Posted July 3, 2014 I have one and it is normal. I have not noticed any line durability issues because of the design. I would enjoy the reel and don't worry about it as they have a long record of success without many complaints regarding the calais line. 1 Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted July 3, 2014 Super User Posted July 3, 2014 Perhaps one of the finest reels ever built. Enjoy! Quote
Super User F14A-B Posted July 3, 2014 Super User Posted July 3, 2014 You ain't kidding , those reels have not been surpassed in my opinion. Quote
Super User FishTank Posted July 4, 2014 Super User Posted July 4, 2014 Oh how I miss my Calais. I sold it, needed the cash. I never had an issue with line but I used either 12lb Yozuri hybrid or 12lb Trilene 100% FC. I also used KVD line conditioner every once in a while. Maybe spraying it on the spool was causing the frame to stay slick, causing less wear on the line. Quote
John G Posted July 4, 2014 Posted July 4, 2014 Just bought an Antares AR yesterday.. Can't wait for it to get here! I used to have the CL100A and regretfully sold it. I will not make that mistake again! Quote
Super User Raul Posted July 4, 2014 Super User Posted July 4, 2014 Funny that you mention it guys but I don´t regret selling my 100A, bought it and got a TDZ instead, also a fantastic reel to the point that I have 4. Quote

I will not make that mistake again! Coincidentally, I fished my Antares (5.6) today. Very nice reel. It gets my highest recommendation: It works, catches fish... From today: 1 Quote
