Justin2 Posted July 3, 2014 Posted July 3, 2014 Looking to buy a new jig rod, the rods I'm looking at are the Powell Endurance 714 and the Phenix M1 7'2 heavy. I can get the Powell for 150$ and with the 4th of July sale on *** I can get them M1 for 152$ It would be my first Powell and I've handled them in stores and like them, but no tackle shop around me has the M1's, but I've heard nothing but greats things about them. So which one would y'all choose? Quote
Jon G Posted July 3, 2014 Posted July 3, 2014 I use a 714 for jigs and it has become one of my favorite Jig rods. I havent used a M1 so I cant speak for it though. Quote
Arv Posted July 3, 2014 Posted July 3, 2014 Both are great but I'd lean towards the endurance. I had the 723cef and the m1 heavy and for whatever reason, usually had the 723 in my hands. Quote
21farms Posted July 3, 2014 Posted July 3, 2014 i used to have multiples of the powell max rods but, for some reason, i get away from powells...i don't know why as they're fine rods and i certainly did like the ones i had. anyway, i currently own an M1 72H like the one you're thinking about. what i like about it: weight - it is only 4.1 ounces, reel seat - the offset angle of the grip is really comfortable, action - the tip is actually fairly soft but gets down to the meaty portion of the blank plenty fast, and cosmetics - nice looking rod looks even better with my revo rocket. what i don't like: hook keeper - the placement behind the handle just KILLS me. hope this helps somewhat. good luck. Global Moderator Mike L Posted July 3, 2014 Global Moderator Posted July 3, 2014 I have 3 Phenix rods and love them all.. The M1 7'2 mh/f, X 11 composite crank rod and a M1 m/xf spinning rod. Never owned a Powell rod so can't help you there. I agree with 21farms, Phenix could have put more thought into the location of the hook keeper but it's certainly not a deal breaker. They are light, balanced, strong and very well made rods for sure. I'm also thinking about getting the M1 Heavy as I hear great things about them. Not too many folks comment on the Phenix line here, so I just wanted to throw in my thoughts. I'm sure you'd be pleased with either. Mike Quote
Droppingshot Posted July 3, 2014 Posted July 3, 2014 I'm going to mirror what everyone said about the hook keeper. Not only is it in a inconvenient location, but the keeper is tiny and barely holds on to my hooks. Now is that enough reason to get a Powell? That's up to you. The phenix is going to be more comfortable and a little less top heavy in my experience from handling them in my local shop. I like the powells and almost buy one every time I get a new rod. As for phenix, I own the 7'2 and it's been an amazing rod. Up until a week ago when I broke it a foot from the tip on a hookset. Having to pay $50 to replace it is t a huge deal but something I'm not happy about having to do. Now with that being said, I just bought a 7'8" mh phenix to go along with my heavy. I really like the rods, which is why I bought another. If it breaks again I might make the switch to a different company. I am pretty hard on my gear but the phenix just feels better in hand to me. I'd go for either one. I'm sure you'd be happy with either brand. My comment was not meant to discourage you from buying a phenix. But to share my experience. Quote
DTack Posted July 3, 2014 Posted July 3, 2014 Of the two I would go with Phenix. If possible try to handle both in a store before you decide. Quote
GADawgs Posted July 3, 2014 Posted July 3, 2014 I haven't handled the Pheniz but I have the Endurance 714 for jigs and plastics and I really like it. I am going to buy more of the endurance line in the future. Good luck, it sounds like either will be a great choice! Quote
