I love eating largemouth bass. Taste just like any other fish. I batter them with an egg and then Shorelunch and put them in my Emeril Deep Fryer. Surprisingly deep fried fish this way is my favorite way to cook fish now. I no longer order fish at restaurants anymore since it won't taste this good. Exceptions for sushi and Ahi Tuna though. My friend was skeptical of the taste of bass and I cooked him and his daughter some and they both thought it was great. He was surprised when I told him it was bass. Anything in the 1lbs.-2lbs. range is good for eating. Any bigger and it's doesn't cook well and any smaller and it's too small. I also like to leave the bigger ones to breed. I don't eat smallmouth bass or rock bass though.

Who eats bass?

I'm not ashamed to admit that I will eat a bass if one bites when I am keeping walleye or crappie. Like you, I think they taste like any other good white meat fish (bluegill, crappie, yellow perch, etc).

For anyone who is going to try it... Make sure you take off the red meat that is on the bottom side of the fillet between the meat and the skin if there is any there, that will make it taste real fishy.

Grown up eating bass and crappie my dad always brought home fish.. I still keep a few from time to time myself. Dunno why it's such a taboo to some..

Bass are very tasty! i'd say the better meat on Bass is that 1-2# range. Any bigger the meat is not near as good.

Seems to be a societal taboo.

You have your fishing license/permit don´t you ?

You respect size limits ?

You respect possesion limits ?

You obey laws and regulations ?

If all your answers are positive then the fish is yours for you to do whatever you want, screw the chest beaters ( mea culpa, mea culpa, mea culpa ). I have no beef with people following the rules.

It´s been a loooong time since the last time I ate a bass, but that doesn´t mean I don´t eat or will eat bass.

They literally taste identical to the grass or weeds that they live in. No thanks. Smallmouth are different, but LM taste like grass.

Around here - It's Pike, Muskie, Walleye and of course - Bigger Bass . . .

I bet that perch and panfish dine on the fry too.

But a few times a year - me too.

I'll have to respectfully disagree with you that bass taste like grass.

I think they taste like any other white meat fish.

I've eaten sunfish, crappie, perch and bass. The only one I don't like is largemouth. Every time Ive eaten it, it tastes like a seaweed salad more than fish. I've had it fried, baked, broiled and grilled all with identical results. Never noticed this with other fish that live in vegetation. Given the choice, I would go with crappie every time. Any suggestions to get rid of the grassy taste?

I just cook them and clean them the normal way. Maybe only eat them later when the water is cold and the flesh is firmer.

And cook them the way I do with a deep fryer and Shorelunch. My brother tried grilling bass and it was horrible.

We have an annual fishing trip where we go to my friends place and we catch and eat bass. All the guys love the bass and none of them normally eat bass. And like I said with my one friend, he thought it was walleye or northern because of the size of the fillets. Said it tasted like walleye. Most people can't tell the difference when it's deep fried in Shorelunch.

Doesn't do it for me. Honestly, there aren't many freshwater fish that do. Just not a fan. If I've got to cover fish with seasonings and deep fry it to the point where you can tell what species it is, odds are I won't be having much of it if there's an alternative.

I am wary of eating anything in my local waters...

We just fried a bunch of smallies 2 weeks ago. Beer battered half of them and breaded the others in panko. Served with slaw, greens, cornbread, fried garlic scapes and onin rings. Hard to beat.

The only time I eat bass is when I go on vacation with my family.  It has been a tradition for over 30 years that we always have at least one fish meal.  This year we had 3 largemouth and 3-4 smallmouth plus some bonus walleye and pike.  Hard to beat the walleye for taste, but all of them are good when they go straight from the lake into the frying pan.
