xAngler.rainey Posted July 1, 2014 Posted July 1, 2014 Need suggestions for what lures to use on a drop shot rig for smallmouth. 1 Quote
Super User Crestliner2008 Posted July 1, 2014 Super User Posted July 1, 2014 If it's made out of plastic, chances are pretty good that a smallie will grab it - if you fish it in the right place. My all-time fav is the 4" Roboworm. Doesn't seem to matter much as far as color goes, but these worms produce day in & day out. Fin-S Fish, Senkos, tube, Helgrammites, you name it. I've caught them on most of what is poured into a mold. 3 Quote

Smallie Hunter Posted July 1, 2014 Posted July 1, 2014 Reins bubble shaker 5 inch. It floats and stays horizontal. 1 Quote
Snakehead Whisperer Posted July 2, 2014 Posted July 2, 2014 x2 on the Roboworms. My other top picks would be... -cut tail worm -Zoom finesse worm -ringworm -gulp or similar sized minnow like a Havoc Sick Fish in the small size -3-4" grub I usually like to add anise scent when dropshotting for smallies (although other fish seem to react positively as well.) Spike-It "Gamefish" flavor lure dye is anise scented and lasts a good long while. Like others have stated, pretty much any soft plastics will work on a ds rig. My good friend swears by small 4" lizards and does really well, I can't bring myself to do it . I usually start out on a 1/O hook, but adjust according to my hook up ratio and whether I'm trying to keep the panfish off the line or not. 1 Quote
cueball Posted July 3, 2014 Posted July 3, 2014 Z-Man 4" Finesse Wormz. Work great and you can fish one worm all day. I also like Robo Worms and Zoom Z Drops, but you go through a lot more of them than the Z-Man worm. 1 Quote

mod479 Posted July 11, 2014 Posted July 11, 2014 3 - 5" finesse worms in green pumpkin, melon, or black is a good starting point just about anywhere. I try to keep it simple now that I have confidence in the rig instead of messing around throwing a dozen colors of the same bait. Not neccesary in most cases. Quote
Zippyduck Krimm Posted July 12, 2014 Posted July 12, 2014 Jackall crosstail shad, 3-4" and senkos 2 Quote
SMB101 Posted July 13, 2014 Posted July 13, 2014 4" Pro Senko , chompers and Jackell crosstail which is a first this year and has been working out well. Quote
Super User kickerfish1 Posted July 13, 2014 Super User Posted July 13, 2014 Jackall I-Shad Jackkall Cross tail shad Roboworm Sculpin Roboworm 4 inch worm Strike king dream shot Keitech sex impact 4.8 inch If you can't catch them on these something is wrong. 2 Quote
Super User everythingthatswims Posted July 13, 2014 Super User Posted July 13, 2014 Anything 2-5" long with a straight tail (and it doesn't necessarily have to have a straight tail, some people drop shot with little swimbaits) 3-4" is the most common size though. Quote
NathanW Posted July 25, 2014 Posted July 25, 2014 For Smallies 4.5 inch curl tail roboworm if there is current. 4.5 inch straight tail worm if there is not current Late summer and into fall I switch to the Z-Man Shad-Z in green pumpkin because these fish will flat out eat anything and Elaztech will stay on your hook through multiple fish and constant dink nibbling. For LMB 6" straight tail Roboworm Quote
MichiganBass80 Posted July 26, 2014 Posted July 26, 2014 I'm new to targeting smallmouth, but so far the Strike King KVD Dreamshot both 4 and 5 inch have worked for me. So far green pumpkin has worked the best, followed by KVD magic and candy craw. Picked up a pack of morning dawn as well, but haven't tried them out yet. Quote
gettin bent Posted August 2, 2014 Posted August 2, 2014 Roboworm 4" Berkley gulp leech 3" black. To get better action on the leech take a ultiliy knife a fillet the leech length wise makin two leechs. Sometime this is the ticket for finicky smallies. Put the flat side up. Xzone slammer 3" and tail hook it. This way when you lower your rod tip it glides away from you. This is really effective mid summer in depth less then 12ft. Quote
Dinky Posted August 14, 2014 Posted August 14, 2014 All the above obviously work. I caught a bunch of smallmouth on Champlain a couple weeks ago drop shooting in deep water rock piles using 4 and 5 inch Senkos wacky rigged, with tips tinted in chartreuse. Also caught a few on a 6 inch finesse worm. All in various watermelon or lighter green. Quote

Super User ww2farmer Posted August 15, 2014 Super User Posted August 15, 2014 Gulp...............3" minnows, 3" fry, and 3" leeches. I generally don't like Gulp products, but for drop shotting specifically for smallmouth, I have found nothing that works better. Almost every single smallmouth I have ever caught over 5lbs has come on a dropshotted Gulp product. Lots of 4+ lbers on other things, but for some reason the big ones like Gulp. Quote
Super User Crestliner2008 Posted August 15, 2014 Super User Posted August 15, 2014 Another thing to keep in mind here is that you really should carry a variety of plastics to present to the fish. They can turn on/turn off one particular style/size/color quite rapidly. They have ample time to look over your offering and accept or reject it. So, if you think you are over fish and you haven't had any that take, try switching over to an entirely different style. BTW, another "crackerjack" bait is the 3" Sluggo, nose hooked! 1 Quote
BasshunterJGH Posted October 25, 2014 Posted October 25, 2014 4.5 inch straight tail roboworms and tubes are top producers for me. Morning dawn is my favorite color robo, the best tube I've found is the gitzit 3 inch by far the best color is brown craw/salt pepper at least in my area... Quote
Hanover_Yakker Posted October 25, 2014 Posted October 25, 2014 PowerTeam Lures 3.6" JP Hammershad - it has one of the best baitfish profiles out there. If you're interested, drop me a line and I'll send you some info. Quote
