2833-34497 Posted July 1, 2014 Posted July 1, 2014 I'm heading to Grass Valley would like to take my kayak to get a little bass fishing in. Don't know anything about the area, but Collins Lake and Bullards Bar Reservoir sound like good places for Spotted Bass! Any advice or info which lake is better for fishing bass in a kayak? I found out Collins Lake ramp is OK, but still need to find out if Bullards Bar Reservoir ramps are in good shape and which launch would be better for fishing since getting around on such a big lake in a kayak would be tough. Never fished for Spots but I here they are fun!! Any information is appreciated here or you can PM me.Thanks for your time, Chris Quote
starcraft1 Posted July 2, 2014 Posted July 2, 2014 At this time of yr. both are full of wake boarders & pwc's. Best times to fish are from 4 am till maybe 10 am. After that any boat or yak would be dangerous to fish out of. Both have big spots in them up to 9+ lbs. and over 9 lbs. Both lakes have low water levels right now and neither are concidered "big" lakes and a yak should take you where you need to go. Top water (buzz baits, spooks, poppers) first, then jigs later. The jig colors I'd use are G.P./org. or G.P./brn./ org. or purple. 10 lb. F.C. leader (6') on 20 or 30 lb. braid should do the trick. Cokes and crawdads are the primeary food right now so a white or silver sided blue back swimbait should work good also. Word of advice, I wouldn't fish either one right now because of the safty factor. I've yet to find a wakeboarder or jet skier that has any knowledge of water safty and a yak would be very dangerous to be out in around them. Look for smaller lakes closer to Grass Valley, or the Yuba river below Collins lake. Please be careful, I don't need to read about another yaker being drowned. Quote

I think I'll use the hours you recommend since I like early morning/night fishing anyways on busy lakes!! I'm also planning on using the Dark Day Ramp, so maybe I avoid more traffic staying away from the main lake. I hope that and going early anyways!! Really want to thank you again thou!! Quote

I had my oldest boy move here with his family and wanted to get a day fishing in while here and sounded like these are the 2 better lakes even though Rollins Reservoir and Scotts Flat Reservoir are even a lot closer to where I'm staying!
