crazyjoeclemens Posted June 29, 2014 Posted June 29, 2014 Does anyone still use Monofilament, or is it all braid and fluorocarbon these days? If you do use it, what brand and what presentation(s) do you use it for? Quote
Super User Tywithay Posted June 29, 2014 Super User Posted June 29, 2014 I use it for topwater, crankbaits, and spinnerbaits. Lines I prefer are Sunline Shooter Defier, Shooter Defier Armilo, and Super Natural. I also really like Toray Bawo Polyamide Plus. Quote
Super User A-Jay Posted June 29, 2014 Super User Posted June 29, 2014 I use 20lb mono exclusively for all techniques whenever I'm fishing here ~ A-Jay Quote
Super User F14A-B Posted June 29, 2014 Super User Posted June 29, 2014 Yep, long time user here, but I use co-poly and Yozuri Hybrid too... A little FC.... No braid ... Yet. Quote
thehooligan Posted June 29, 2014 Posted June 29, 2014 I'm typically a braid/copoly user but I've been playing with maxima ultra green mono and really like it. Started using 20lb for Swimbaits, and now I've been using 12lb for cranks and 6lb for finesse. Really strong smooth line... Quote
0119 Posted June 29, 2014 Posted June 29, 2014 Use it for everything. 12# for baitcasters, 8# on spinners. Hate braid Quote
Grantman83 Posted June 30, 2014 Posted June 30, 2014 Suffix siege in 12 or 14lb are on my all purpose moving baits rod. Amazing stuff Quote
LMB KING Posted June 30, 2014 Posted June 30, 2014 Mono is the most versatile fishing line. I use it for bigger fish. Quote
TNBassin' Posted June 30, 2014 Posted June 30, 2014 I use Yo Zuri and Seaguar Red Label. No mono, no braid. Quote
EvanT123 Posted June 30, 2014 Posted June 30, 2014 Use suffix 8 and 10 for leader material and 12lb big game on a baitcaster. Neither has let me down. Quote
TrippyJai Posted June 30, 2014 Posted June 30, 2014 McCoy Mean Green for almost everything. I do use braid for punching and frogs. Fluoro sometimes. Quote
Super User Raul Posted June 30, 2014 Super User Posted June 30, 2014 Fluorocarbon is monofilament. 1 Quote
Super User Jeff H Posted June 30, 2014 Super User Posted June 30, 2014 Berkley XT clear for me. 6,8 or 10 on spinning. 10,14 or 17 on casting. Have XT on most of my rigs. I use it for everything but frogs. I do have braid on a couple heavy cover rigs... 50 or 65lb Power Pro and there are certain situations I like to use Fireline too, but no fluorocarbon for me. Been there done that too fragile and honestly did not find one thing I really liked about it so I stuck to XT. Quote
Super User Raul Posted June 30, 2014 Super User Posted June 30, 2014 XT is a good line, when I have to reduce my line diameter and since Big Game is not manufactured in less than 10 lb then it' s XT for me. Quote
0119 Posted June 30, 2014 Posted June 30, 2014 XT is a good line, when I have to reduce my line diameter and since Big Game is not manufactured in less than 10 lb then it' s XT for me. Big Game is made in 8, I use it on spinning, Abu 1500c's and Abu 2500c's all the time. I get it at BPS Quote
crazyjoeclemens Posted June 30, 2014 Author Posted June 30, 2014 Glad to hear I'm not too far outdated. I'm using 8# Stren on my light spinning gear and 14# Stren on my baitcasters. I figure once I get better with my baitcasters, I might switch them over to braid, but I'm still prone to an occasional backlash. I use 20# Big Game on my catfish gear. Its tough stuff. Quote
BobP Posted June 30, 2014 Posted June 30, 2014 I haven't been unhappy with any regular mono or copoly line - Big Game, Izor Line, McCoy's, Yozuri, Suffix all work OK. But there are differences. Many companies sell a hard surface copoly such as Trilene XT or Izor Line Premium designed for baitcaster reels and a softer, limper line such as Trilene XL, Izor XXX for spinning reels. So you can mix and match according to the line characteristics you need. The hard surface lines generally have less stretch, better knot strength, and are more abrasion resistant but they are also a little stiffer and develop more spool memory than their softer brand mates. I used Big Game for years and it was reliable on baitcasters and cheap but it doesn't have as consistent a diameter as most other brands, if that is an issue. More recently, I'm using Izor Line Premium and XXX, plus Yo Zuri Hybrid and like them all. I like Izor Line when you can find 1/4 lb spools on sale for less than $10. I think McCoy's Mean Green is also a very good line. It's doped with penesil (whatever that is) which inhibits spool memory and makes it last a long time. Mono/copoly especially benefits from using KVD line conditioner regularly. Quote
Super User new2BC4bass Posted June 30, 2014 Super User Posted June 30, 2014 Mono is the most versatile fishing line. X2. 4#-8# on spinning reels. Two spinning reels have braid...10# and 30#. 6#-17# on baitcast reels. One b/c has 10# fluorocarbon with 4 having braid ranging from 20#-55#. Always used Trielene XL. Been trying several other brands. Not because XL is failing me, but simply to see what else is out there. I'm a fan of Sufix...both Elite and Siege, but also like Sunline. Maxima and McCoy are must tries for me as is Silver Thread AN40 Copolymer. Heard good things about all. Lots of good monofilament lines out there. Trying all of them would take some time. 1 Quote
crazyjoeclemens Posted June 30, 2014 Author Posted June 30, 2014 I tried the Trilene XL, and it felt too stretchy for me. The Stren feels a lot better on hook set, but that's just my uninformed observation. Quote
Squirmin Wormin Posted August 5, 2014 Posted August 5, 2014 I've used mono lines and well my pb on the wall isn't complaining neither am i. i believe what work's for you Quote
ThatZX14Fella Posted August 5, 2014 Posted August 5, 2014 I use it on everything. I like my Trilene Big Game 12lb test. 1 Quote
Super User Catt Posted August 5, 2014 Super User Posted August 5, 2014 Berkley Big Game the real Mean Green! All 27 of my double digit bass were caught on 15# Big Game! 2 Quote
Super User MCS Posted August 5, 2014 Super User Posted August 5, 2014 Sufix siege and elite for spinning gear and leader for some casting applications Quote
