1099gl Posted June 28, 2014 Posted June 28, 2014 I started fishing them this weekend and love them even though last week i wanted nothing to do with them. I have been using a PROvider cut n' edge swim jig in bluegill color with a keitech 4.8 inch swing impact in bluegill flash. Whats your opinion on swim jigs do you like them hate them? color brand ect. I have not fished with shad color because im usually fishing smaller ponds bak fishing. Quote
Super User iabass8 Posted June 28, 2014 Super User Posted June 28, 2014 Love them 1/4 oz Brovarney Swim jig in Blue Crab (bluegill), white/gold, black/purple Trailer varies on how they are biting. Quote
Jon G Posted June 29, 2014 Posted June 29, 2014 I love swim jigs there one of my favorite baits to throw. I really love throwing heavy duty swim jigs such as a 3/8 ounce dirty jigs california swim jig in crappie with a roboworm ez shad swimbait in hologram shad. But I also throw the regular diry jig swim jigs in bluegill and tactical shad. Quote
Super User MCS Posted June 29, 2014 Super User Posted June 29, 2014 Check out V&M clif pace swim jigs, couple good blue gill colors, bar fish, wat red, blue craw. Quote
CJV Posted June 29, 2014 Posted June 29, 2014 Dirty jigs California swim jig ... Best on the market Quote
Super User Jrob78 Posted June 29, 2014 Super User Posted June 29, 2014 I prefer the "northern" style swim jigs. I make my own but like Brovarney's if I'm buying them. Quote

I use the SK swim jigs with either a havoc subwoofer, rage tail menace, or rage grub as the trailer. My top three are black and blue, blue gill, and sexy chartreuse. Very versatile bait and it's fun to use. I also use some swim jigs from a local company here from bumpkinjigs.com. They are very well made, and have great colors. Some that I've never seen before but work awesome. Quote

Super User iabass8 Posted June 29, 2014 Super User Posted June 29, 2014 Whats a "northern style" swim jig? essentially a more narrow bullet shape head design /w a softer weedguard and a lighter(not light just lighter than your california heavy duty hook) wire hook. also the skirting is traditionally a much lesser 20-30 strand skirt. 2 Quote
War Eagle 44 Posted June 29, 2014 Posted June 29, 2014 Dirty jigs California swim jig ... Best on the market While I agree that Dirty Jigs are the best on the market I'll have to disagree with you on the Cali swim jig. Their regular swim jig head with the no jack hook is the best swim jig made, IMHO of course. I picked up 4 more at the shop last week, 3 in the Coosa Special color and 1 Warmouth. Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted June 29, 2014 Global Moderator Posted June 29, 2014 When do you guys fish a swim jig? I can't ever figure out when I should try one over a bladed jig. We have very little vegetation except for water willows and that seems like most of the time guys are using them around vegetation. I've been fishing a 1/2oz with a Havoc Subwoofer with a 6' 10" MH/F rod paired with a 200E7 and 40lb braid. I haven't given them a fair chance I'm sure but it's hard to do when I'm catching fish on a bladed jig and the catching stops as soon as I pick up a swim jig. Quote
Super User Catch and Grease Posted June 29, 2014 Super User Posted June 29, 2014 I've started using swim jigs but literally the only trailer I've caught fish on is the rage craw if I put anything else on I lose confidence and can't boat any fish lol What are some good trailers y'all like on the cheaper side? Frenchman83 Posted June 29, 2014 Posted June 29, 2014 I will throw a swimjig any time. Especially in clearer water. They do work great running through vegetation or bouncing off of stuff. Basically you can run a swimjig anytime you would a spinnerbait, squarebill, or bladed jig. I like the Berkley Grass Pig or Kalin's 5" grub. Generally run 3/8 oz. When they nip at it stop reeling. When they hammer it lean into them and reel faster. Quote
Mr Swim Jig Posted June 29, 2014 Posted June 29, 2014 Absolutely my favorite technique to fish. I prefer the Norther Style swim jigs and really prefer North Star Baits original swim jig. I mainly use white or black and blue in 5/16oz and prefer Reaction Innovations Skinny Dipper for a trailer. I will also use on occasion watermelon red flash... Quote
shanksmare Posted June 29, 2014 Posted June 29, 2014 I too like the NSCB original swim jig in 1/4 oz size. I like black/blue, white/shad color and green pumpkin hues. I usually use a TriggerX Slop hopper in similar color for a trailer. I usually break off 1/2" or so off the head of the trailer. I fish it with a W&M Rick Clunn 7' heavy action s-glass rod and 20# Sufix Siege mono. I continually give the rod little twitches as I retrieve the jig with a slow stop-go action. (Randy Howell has a video on power swim jigging thats similar to what I do). I use it pretty much anytime. If its cloudy and or windy I lean towards the chatterbait. If its calm and sunny I lean towards the swim jig. Sometimes they just won't chase and I use a worm or Super Fluke on a weighted hook. When I first started using a swim jig I couldn't buy a bite. I'd go up and down a bank with a spinnerbait and murder them. I'd switch to a swim jig and nada. The proper (for me anyways) swim jig, trailer and retrieve made all the difference in the world. Switching to a rod with a parabolic bend and nylon mono fined tuned the whole approach and increased my success. Quote
nascar2428 Posted June 29, 2014 Posted June 29, 2014 It pains me to say this, but I have caught more fish on the swim jig versus my beloved spinnerbaits. Favorite brands and colors, SK hack attack bluegill and all terrain in bluegill and pumpkin seed. I have'nt thrown a spinnerbait in two weeks, even in favorable conditions. Quote

Honestly I dont throw swimjigs as much now because I think bladed swimjigs are a lot better. I use a swimjig over a bladed swim jig when the fish want something with less thump. Quote
Super User Catch and Grease Posted June 29, 2014 Super User Posted June 29, 2014 Is there a difference between a bladed swimbait and a chatterbait or is it the same thing? Quote
Jon G Posted June 29, 2014 Posted June 29, 2014 Is there a difference between a bladed swimbait and a chatterbait or is it the same thing? There the samething. Chatterbait is the name for the Z-man Bladed swim Jig and the name stuck with almost all bladed swim jigs. Its kind of like Kleenex and Tissue 1 Quote

I keep it very simple, to me a swim jig is just a bladeless spinnerbait. They work better in clear or stained water and it is more finesse presentation than a spinnerbait. For trailers I use a grub in open water/sparse cover and a paddle tail like a RI dipper in weeds. Allen Quote
