FirstnameLastname Posted June 27, 2014 Posted June 27, 2014 I like chain pickeral, by the way rock bass doesn't count as bass. There more like panfish. Quote
Super User Jar11591 Posted June 27, 2014 Super User Posted June 27, 2014 There's nothing like a big northern pike thrashing at the end of your line. Just seeing them in the water gives me a huge adrenaline rush, and a chill down my spine. Quote
Super User gulfcaptain Posted June 27, 2014 Super User Posted June 27, 2014 Gonna have to say just for the pure fun in catching, Jack Crevalle's. They are just mean, explode on topwater lures like no other, and will fight as hard as they can all the way. Quote
Super User flyfisher Posted June 27, 2014 Super User Posted June 27, 2014 I like chain pickerel as well but i love fishing for big brown trout in spring creeks and native brookies in tiny mountain streams....if i didn't move to an area where i had to drive 2 hours for browns and brookies i probably wouldn't have even gotten back into bass fishing Quote
Super User Catch and Grease Posted June 27, 2014 Super User Posted June 27, 2014 If were talking only freshwater I like catching chain pickerel, but I've never fished for pike or muskie sadly Quote
Capt.Bob Posted June 28, 2014 Posted June 28, 2014 My absolute favorite fish to pursue is hands down Walleye, my favorite fish to catch is Smallmouth, and my favorite for the table is Yellow Perch. This might be different if I didn't live where I do as flyfisher stated in his post but thank God I have plenty of Walleye and Smallmouth around. I fish for a lot of different species and love catching them all, but these are my main targets. There is nothing like ambushing 30+ lbs King Salmon in a shallow stream littered with timber and rock, but way more work out than this old man can handle day after day, but it sure is fun for 2 or 3 trips each fall. MIbassin Posted June 28, 2014 Posted June 28, 2014 Barracuda or Jacks, especially while flats fishing Quote
Super User SirSnookalot Posted June 28, 2014 Super User Posted June 28, 2014 Hard to say what my favorite is, so many of them down here I enjoy catching. Inshore and near shore snook are my favorite, for hard fighting fish permit followed real close by jack crevalles and tarpon. For a pure bone jarring strike barracuda caught on a surgical tube, seldom are they less than 38". These are my everyday fish. Offshore are amberjacks, dolphin and sailfish. Any of the small tuna species, bonita, black fin and skip jacks. Quote

I think they're tremendous fun to catch. Drum are fun to catch, but man they're disappointing when you're fishing for and hoping for something else. I sight fish for them occasionally with light spinning gear and live crawdads. As close as you can get to saltwater flats fishing in Kansas A big drum is very wary but when you get one to crunch a craw they put up a heck of a fight. I've heard they're pretty good eating too. Super User Dwight Hottle Posted July 1, 2014 Super User Posted July 1, 2014 That thing is a lump Dwight! Wow. I'm surprised you northern guys don't enjoy drum more. I think they're tremendous fun to catch. On lake erie the drum are called sheepshead & are considered a trash fish. They are always a disappointment when caught fishing for walleye or bass. I have noticed that the Canadians think they are great fun & always take pictures of them. Especially in Ontario. 1 Quote
Tim Kelly Posted July 1, 2014 Posted July 1, 2014 I know they're considered trash, but like bowfin, I think they're a blast to catch and am not disappointed when they put in an appearance. Variety is the spice of life. Quote
5dollarsplash Posted July 1, 2014 Posted July 1, 2014 Muskie when you finally get one on are a lot of fun, as are big pike. The fact that you could be wounded (by the fish) while getting a hook out is a strange rush. We had a day last year, labor day I think, that was saved by a bowfin. Nothing decent all day and then BAM! Tons of excitement, drag peeling out, death roll in the net. If we'd been having a good day bass fishing I'd have called it a pest, but as we weren't, he was a hoot. 1 Quote
Jon G Posted July 2, 2014 Posted July 2, 2014 Freshwater- Cutthroat trout Saltwater- Thresher and Mako Sharks My dad was a fly fishing guide in Colorado for a long time and I have gotten to do some fishing with him there and I absolutley love cutthroats they are absolutley beautiful fish. I've lived in SoCal the majority of my life and my dad and I also loved targeting giant fish so we did a lot of saltwater fishing for thresher and mako sharks. I cant think of a bigger thrill than having a #150+ Mako on the end of your line and seeing it jump 10 feet out of the water making your drag scream. 1 Quote
Super User SirSnookalot Posted July 2, 2014 Super User Posted July 2, 2014 Give me a hard fighting so called trash fish over a not so hard fighting gamefish any time. Since I don't keep much for the table, it's all about the fight. Luckily I live within a few minutes where I have the potential to catch both hard fighting game and trash fish any day. Moving from the north to a coastal region there are fish I have no interest in catching anymore, down here it's not about catching 50 1 pounders but catching 1 50 pounder, it don't happen every day........lol. OntarioFishingGuy Posted July 3, 2014 Posted July 3, 2014 My favorite fish to catch is Steelhead, fly fishing. Even more than bass. I fish for them in creeks about 15 feet wide, where if you find the right pool, you will find a few 20 pounders. Biggest i have ever seen was probably 28 pounds. I thought it was a Chinook. Other than that, I love Browns, Rainbows, Muskies, and Carp. I know, Carp... Quote
