MassBass Posted June 27, 2014 Posted June 27, 2014 This year i have been bassing. I ususally am out in my kayak, and i only bring one rod. a 7' medium power. But this isn't a great rod i have been using, it came with a cheap casting combo i got years ago. I feel like this cheap rod is mushing and muddling the vibration and feeling of lures/weeds/fish. Its functional and ive had success with it, i just feel there are much better rods i should be using. This rod is a Hurricane brand. The rod i have had in mind is the johnny morris carbonlite micro-guide. Should i get this rod or do you have another suggestion? My budget is up to $200 and i want a 7' medium. Quote

St Croix Avid, some of the Dobyns and Powell rods are within your price range, the bottom line is with 200 dollars to spend you have a lot of options. Quote

It's not gonna cost as much as some other name brands but still is a quality rod. Don't let price dictate how good you think a rod is. The most expensive rod I have is about $150, but must run in the $100-130 range. And one of my favorite rods I have purchased this year was a BPS Crankin stick to fish umbrella rigs on....$79.00 and the rod is spot on for what I'm wanting out of it. You can use the extra savings and match it with one of the Carbonlite reels, yes have 3 of those and one of them is on that Crankin Stick. Quote

The first one that comes to mind is the Daiwa Zillion that is on sale at TW for $178... Other rods are the Daiwa Tatula, St Croix Avid, Duckett Micro Magic, etc... there are just a ton of them Quote

There is one on my horizon..............somewhere. The Tatula rods are getting good reviews. The *** 13 would be another good choice. I really like both my Smallmouth rods...a 6'10: MF and 6'9" MXF. A friend tells me the Aetos is a super rod in its price range. Haven't been out locally except for a little casting practice earlier this year with mine...a 7' MHF. Also look at the Powell Endurance and Pinnacle line. Way too many good options. I think you need to invest in at least 6 rods. 1 Quote
Super User FishTank Posted June 27, 2014 Super User Posted June 27, 2014 If you are fishing from a kayak, I would avoid a rod with a split grip. It would be to easy to slip on a hook set. If it where me I would go for the St. Croix Avid or you could save your money and get a G. Loomis IMX. If you go the Loomis route, go for the MH instead. The falcon low rider is also a fine rod but not as sensitive as the Avid or the IMX and it's also heavier but it has good power and hook sets. If you can, talk to one of the guys at BPS and see if they will let you bring your reel in so can get a feel for the whole set up. Quote

So do most of the people I go with and never heard of an issue. +1 on the Tatula. I have the 6'10" MH and actually just bought the 7' M today. They are nice sticks for sure. Others to look at... Fenwick ET Smallmouth as was previously mentioned, Fenwick HMG, Aetos. The Avids were great for the money some years ago, since then, a lot of manufacturers have caught and passed St Croix at that price point unless you can find a deal on a used one I would look elsewhere Quote

The Daiwa Tatula has been getting a lot of love lately too. If you are OK with buying used you can probably pick up a much nicer rod if you're patient. I have 5 Dobyns Champion Extremes, 4 of which I bought for just over $200 Quote

After I bought my first one I just couldn't Stop and soon after I had Fishing rods from almost every maker of rods there was. I tried them all except for MegaBass and GLoomis (I'll soon be trying those) For $200 there a lot of great fishing rods you can try, You need to go somewhere that has a lot of the different brands and hold a bunch of them but not just hold them, get the store to mount the reel you will be using to some of the ones you number it down to, because the rod will feel different once you mount the reel. The best rod I've used, (IMO) Is the Duckett White Ice line but there are some other great Rod's such as Powell, Denali, St Croix, Falcon, ***, Kistler and many more. If you can though, check out the Duckett White Ice line of rod's, you will be happy that you did. Quote

There are many great rods under 200 so most of it comes down to what your looking for. You can't go wrong with a crucial or duckett as has already been mentioned bur out of those 2 id lean towards the crucial as it just feels better to me. Id definitely take a look at a tatula too everyone i know that has one loves theirs. If you have only been using one rod though id defintely think about getting 2 omens or even a mh *** and a m elite tech smallmouth and that way Quote
