Bassin4Fun2 Posted June 27, 2014 Posted June 27, 2014 Last year I purchased a Minn Kota Endurance C2 30 and installed it on a Jon boat. It works pretty well for the small lake I fish, but if I get into any grass at all it just wraps around the prop. Does anyone have any experience with the Minn Kota Weedless Wedge Prop or Weedless Wedge Prop 2 or recommendations on a better prop that might cut through grass better? Thanks for your help Quote
Super User Goose52 Posted June 27, 2014 Super User Posted June 27, 2014 This is a Weedless Wedge prop on an MK 45lb Traxxis. Not very "weedless" is it... If you go through the grass slow, I think it's just gonna foul - go through at a higher speed/rpm, the prop perhaps cuts better. When the grass gets too thick, I paddle through (I have a canoe). I don't know what the folks with bass boats do. Quote
Kevin22 Posted June 27, 2014 Posted June 27, 2014 I have a weedless wedge 2 on a 70# maxxum. Its weedless alright, if you are on 100% and never take your foot off it. Otherwise I'm pulling the d**n thing out of the water and cleaning it off every 15 feet. Quote

Thanks for your help I've upgraded my prop on my C2 30 (use on back of my yak), but find I have to pull out of weeds or I'm in trouble. The Kipawa 314 prop gets really good recommendations, claims 99% weedless, but some have complained that it burns out their motor. http://www.kipawapropellers.com/propellers.html I'd like to try one, but haven't pulled the trigger yet. Bassin4Fun2 Posted June 27, 2014 Author Posted June 27, 2014 Thanks guys, I didn't think it was going to be that easy. Probably should just save up for a more powerful TM. Quote

I've had 50 lb thrust as well. Unless there's something to cut the weeds on the prop, it may be tough. I may very well pull the trigger on one of those Kipawa props. If it solves the problem for $30, then it's all good by me. Quote

Darren - We've had some threads on the Kipawa props before - they might turn up with a search... I bought a Kipawa and installed it on my MK Traxxis. I didn't get any extra speed, but I did get a vibration that wasn't there with the stock prop. I never ran it through any thick grass so I can't say how it would do in slop as compared to the stock prop. I only left it on for 4 or 5 trips so I never did use it enough to have any adverse effects on the motor (and I've heard the stories about burning up TMs as well). It's now hanging from the peg-board over my tackle workbench with dust on it... 2 Quote

I emphasize the word "might" in my reply, but the more I read (and I've been re-reading reviews since this thread came up tonight), I may dump the idea and just do what I do now. Pull up the motor and paddle. Works for me, though when I do get hung up I have to pull over to an area I can get out and clear the prop. A pain, so pulling up and paddling has become the standard. tnriverluver Posted June 28, 2014 Posted June 28, 2014 My very first trolling motor was a 10lb thrust MK bought in 1981. It was advertised as weedless and lived up to the name. Still have it to this day and it still works fine but of course is too weak to be of any real use. The prop on it looks about the same as what is on my current 45lb MKs yet they get anywhere near weeds and they become a wrapped up mess. I don't know what they changed on these motors in recent years but they are no longer the weedless motors that put them on the map to begin with. Quote
Super User WIGuide Posted June 30, 2014 Super User Posted June 30, 2014 Long stringy grass is tough for any trolling motor/prop combo It tends to pull out easily and offers little resistance for a prop to "chop" it's way through. One thing that can help is to sharpen the leading edges of your prop with a file to help the cutting action. Quote

Thanks for your help You need prop speed to take care of weeds. You don't have that with a 30# motor. Quote
Bassin4Fun2 Posted July 6, 2014 Author Posted July 6, 2014 Thanks, I didn't realize you can sharpen these props. Quote
