Hello, I am new to this forum and new to fishing. I have only fished once before and it was down in florida for about an hour (nothing to serious). I really enjoyed the expierence and would like to fish again but I have no idea what I should buy.

I am from the NYC region and will plan on fishing around the Hudson River/Gravesend Bay area (If you google "Gravesend Bay" it will give come up. It's in Brooklyn). And my question was what type of fishing rod, bait, etc. should I buy. I am an absolute beginner and my knowledge in fishing is pretty much non-existent.

So basically I just need some opinion on the Rod I should look into (Brand/Type of rod) and the bait or anything else I should invest in.

Thank you, and if you have any questions that might help please do ask.

Spinning 7 foot medium-heavy rod. A 4000 size spinning reel. The hudson river has other larger game fish other than bass in it so if you catch a big striped bass, you can thank that extra drag and line. I would not recommend a baitcaster for a beginner. Its a pain, but once you practice, its like magic. theirs alot of brands but for you i would get something like a ugly stik GX2. Reel i would get a Penn fierce 4000 size, with 20 pound powerpro braid and a 20 or 30 pound fluorocarbon leader. If you dont want to spend alot on line, then just use only mono line.

By all means, go to the Fishing Articles Section of this site and read the articles for beginner fishermen.  There is a huge amount of information there.

Alright Thanks for the suggestion LMB KING.

Below are the links to what I found

Please let me know what I need from this list or if you have a better recommendation (in-case i picked the wrong one or there is a better one). And also anywhere where I might find better prices. And I am completely knew to the terms and all so I am still trying to get by haha.

@Long Mike . Okay i'll give it another look, thanks for the tip.

all of that is good except for the first link. You can get the red label seaguar instead of the blue label. Cut 3 or 4 foot leader with a uni-to-uni knot. Everything here will cost you about $150 or less so its very cheap but beats other 300+ dollars gear. Make sure that ugly stik rod is a 1 piece rod not a 2 piece. This is also a good set-up for big striped bass and other big game fish. If you think you're not going to encounter big fish like those than you can downsize your line 10 pound braid and 15 pound leader. If your fishing heavy vegetation, than i would put 30 pound braid. It all depends where and what your targeting

yeah I'm not sure what exactly I am targeting but i just want to catch something haha.

and below is the red fishing line i found.

Also since I am a complete newbie to fishing what is the difference between "PowerPro® Braided Spectra® Fiber Micro Filament Line" and "Seaguar® Red Label™ Fluorocarbon Fishing Line" ? do I need both.

and also would you recommend getting a Ugly Gx2 combo?

PowerPro is a strong braided line that has a small diameter and you can cast further also you can feel bites better because it has no stretch. Fluorocarbon line is like regular monofilament line but better, you need it because fish can see your braided line so fluorocarbon is like a transparent line so fish wont see you line. type it in youtube and you'll see. And no, don't buy the combo, the reel in that combo is cheap and garbage so buy the ugly stik Gx2 rod 7 foot, but make sure its a one piece not a two piece rod. pair it up with a Penn fierce 4000 reel and you set. YouTube it. theres alot of videos

If I understand this correctly you will be using the combo in New York in brackish water.  LMB gave an excellent starter combination.  I would definitely spool it up with 20 or 30# braid, I'm personally not crazy for F/C main line or leaders for spinning reels.
