Dylan Cormier Posted June 26, 2014 Author Posted June 26, 2014 I have a rod set up for jerk bait and topwater fishing. i chose florocarbon so my jerkbaits would suspend. will this make my topwater lures sink, and if i use mono will it cause a larger problem for my jerkbait fishing. Quote
OntarioFishingGuy Posted June 26, 2014 Posted June 26, 2014 If the rod is soft enough use braid. Quote
Super User Raul Posted June 26, 2014 Super User Posted June 26, 2014 FC sinks, true, but it ain´t an anchor, it won´t sink your lures nor make them suspend, besides, the suspending properties of a suspending bait vary greatly depending upon water temperature, Nylon "floats", partially true, floats as long as it is dry, but it ain´t cork like buoyant, once the line has absorbed water then it becomes neutrally bouyant, so much for "floats" So, can FC be used for topwater fishing ? yes it can. Super User iabass8 Posted June 26, 2014 Super User Posted June 26, 2014 FC can be used as a topwater line but it is the worst tool for the job. It does have a hindrance on imparting action onto a bait. It wont sink your bait but your line will sink which in turn makes working spook type baits difficult. I'd rather use mono for both topwater/jerkbaits than fluoro for both. I'll be the first to say I'll use fluoro for anything but I'd rather punch /w fluoro than use it as a topwater line. Quote

Heck anything with treblehooks for that matter. Quote
Super User Jrob78 Posted June 26, 2014 Super User Posted June 26, 2014 You will be much better off throwing mono with jerkbaits than fluoro with topwaters. 2 Quote
WVbassin87 Posted June 26, 2014 Posted June 26, 2014 I use fluoro for buzzbaits, but it doesn't make any difference there because the whole point is keeping the bait on top, so your line doesn't have any real chance of affecting anything. i have noticed the way it messes with spooks as ianbass8 said. Super User F14A-B Posted June 27, 2014 Super User Posted June 27, 2014 Don't use fluorocarbon to topwater... Use mono or a co-poly...a bigger diameter depending on bait of course these lines work fine, some like braid. Quote
paul25 Posted June 27, 2014 Posted June 27, 2014 You will be much better off throwing mono with jerkbaits than fluoro with topwaters. x2 on this. buzzbaits are no big deal but poppers are hard to use with fc Quote
jonnyblazex Posted June 27, 2014 Posted June 27, 2014 Top waters are ok (just ok) with fluoro, as mentioned before. They will work decent if you retrieve the bait relatively quick, but if you let the bait sit for a little bit ( poppers, spooks, other walk baits) the line will sink, and then it sux. You can't work your bait good at all, and it even makes the hook set more challenging. Mono dominates for any treble hook bait, be it top water or crank IMO. Both fluoro and braid beat mono and each other at other jobs, but there are certain things that each excel at. Quote
FrankW Posted June 27, 2014 Posted June 27, 2014 Hi Dylan Cormier, I use braid for topwater with a 4" piece of 15# FC tied to a clip/lure. I had a problem with the braid fowling the topwater and the stiffer piece of FC solved that problem. Even though FC will sink, the lure, the braid and the surface tension of the water keeps the 4" piece of FC on the top. Works very well for me for topwater. Frank Quote
Super User Felix77 Posted June 27, 2014 Super User Posted June 27, 2014 I prefer mono for my topwater lures. I generally fish a spook and it is much easier with mono. For smaller things like poppers I tend to go spinning gear. I have braid on the spinning so that work just fine for me. No Fluoro for topwaters. Quote
Brian Needham Posted June 27, 2014 Posted June 27, 2014 I use floro for everything. I dont throw topwater very much, but since I am all flouro I make it work. Buzzbaits it is fine, as it is always moving, spooks and poppers you have to work it faster than really needed..... but if fish are actively hitting topwater it dont matter. you best bet it tie on a fairly long mono leader... Super User Fishes in trees Posted June 27, 2014 Super User Posted June 27, 2014 Two different techniques require two different rods, reels and lines. It is in the rod & reel & line technique specific handbook, somewhere, I forget the page # right now. Quote

Pretty much the same thing here. There are better options but as little as I throw top water I make it work. Quote
Super User FishTank Posted June 27, 2014 Super User Posted June 27, 2014 FC would be the worst thing for the job but would work. I would go with Yozuri Hybrid or braid. Quote
paleus Posted June 28, 2014 Posted June 28, 2014 It's OK if you are burning a buzzbait or something. If you are letting anything sit, braid or mono would be better. I tried fishing a hollow frog with flouro, just because that's what I had on. If I let it sit the line would sink and get hung up under the pads whereas braid would just sit on top and not get hung up. Even casting where there were no pads, the flouro would sink enough to pull the frog under on the retrieve. Quote
bassin151 Posted June 28, 2014 Posted June 28, 2014 I use fluoro for most all my applications unless am fishing heavy cover (trees, jagged rubble) have never seen or had an issue using fluoro with topwater baits. I like to hook set it gives you on topwater strikes as well Quote
Super User RoLo Posted July 7, 2014 Super User Posted July 7, 2014 Really couldn't tell you, but it makes great webbing for my tennis rackets Quote
