The bait monkey got me again today: had just a little change left over after buying line to get a little something. since so many people seem to love black and blue jigs, i grabbed one, but don't have a trailer and won't be able to grab any before my next trip. will that severely affect my chances?

I've caught a big bunch of fish fishing a jig without trailer. On the other hand, in practical terms any soft platic bait you have can be used as trailer ....... just sayin '.

I was watching some fishing show and the guy was flipping and pitching to docks with Hack Attack jigs I think with no trailer. He said for the type of fishing he was doing he didn't want to use trailers. And he caught a ton of fish on the show. That episode was all about fishing a jig without a trailer.

I fished the other day with a KVD swimming jig and two types of trailers. One was black Zoom Super chunks and the other was green Strike King Rodents. Both caught fish and the jig was green and orange.

Sometimes a mismatched trailer is much better than a matching trailer. I use a jig trailer 100% of the time and a wide variety of plastics can be used for jig trailers, including lots of things that aren't typically considered jig trailer material.

If it doesn't hurt why not use plastic?

Forgot my trailers at home one day, so I bit a SK Ocho in half and used that as a trailer...it worked.

Where is it written that trailer color has to match jig color ?

Only time trailer won't match jig is if I'm out of matching colors or not getting bit.

Ok, let me rephrase: trailer matching jig color is not a must.

A jig with no trailer will catch fish but will have a very fast fall which is fine for reaction bites. As for color, there is nothing wrong with some contrast. I won't go so far as to say color has no importance but it's way further down on my personal list of priorities.
