I'm looking to purchase one of the two units with side, down, and switch fire. There is a $20 difference in the two. Both around $1200. Which one should I purchase? They look similarly equipped. Both are brand new.

The 999 has an internal gps receiver, the 998 is external. The 999 needs an additional Ethernet adaptor if you are going to network the unit with another. The 999 has a faster processor.

The 999 is the new one the other is a leftover

That said I have a 998 and it's a great unit but if I had a chance I trade up in a heartbeat.

Thank you. Some good things to consider. Would external GPS be better for marking a waypoint? Because it can be mounted closer to transducer or is there an offset that can be programmed in the newer unit?

You will be more accurate if the gps is near the unit but if your marking something like a brushpile you can easily pick it up with side imaging once your close.

I also have an 1199 with the internal gps but it's on the bow next to the trolling motor transducer.

You can add the GPS puck to the 999 if it wasent accurate enough

Sonar based waypoints will be more accurate if the GPS antenna is where the transducers is.

Visual based waypoints will be more accurate if the GPS antenna is were the unit is.
