Mo_Tick Posted March 8, 2006 Posted March 8, 2006 Well not really, i have been thinking about making my own Jigs and spinnerbaits and what not. But the straw that broke the Camels back was last weekend. i went to the KC Cabelas, bought some tube and plastic worms. wanted to get a few new Tube jig heads. well for 25 i paid 14.99. i pretty certain i can do that a lot cheaper. i have done research and all, are the Do-it Molds good for Jig heads? and i have 50 pounds of lead shot i was going to use for shotgun shells, is that lead good enough to melt and use? i like this new addition to the forum. good stuff here. Siebert Outdoors Posted March 8, 2006 Posted March 8, 2006 Tube jig heads. well for 25 i paid 14.99 That sounds about right 60 cents each for a standard jig head. Thats about the going rate for most jigheads with a premium hook IMO do it molds are the best. Thats all I use. If you have the lead all you will be out is the price of the mold, melter, hooks, time. Sounds like you already have the melter so for what you would pay for 60jigheads you can get all the material for making 100 of them. Mostly depends on the hook you get. mold $28, mustad needle point hooks $12 for 100 (approx) depends on style Quote
Triton21 Posted March 8, 2006 Posted March 8, 2006 If you reload save the shot. Go to your local tire store and get the old wheel weights. They wil do fine for Jigs, Spinnerbaits, and buzzbaits. I don't know how you plan to melt your lead but if you have a turkey or fish fryer and some sort of cast iron pot or pan large enough this will work fine. Dirt and steel on the wheel weights will float to the top and you can skim it off with a spoon. This will give you a clean lead alloy. I use a cornbread stick aluminum and a cast iron one to make ingots. You can either use a ladle or buy a Hot Pot, this is an electric ladle. Do It molds are the best I have found. Hope this helps. IllinoisBasser Posted March 20, 2006 Posted March 20, 2006 Wheel weights? That's a brilliant idea. I am still toying with the idea of making my own jigs and plastics. As soon as I get the boat situation cleared up,making my own jigs and plastics is next on the list. Quote
