Crashcarson Posted June 25, 2014 Posted June 25, 2014 So I'm new to the forum. Nice to meet everyone! Really getting into the sport lately. I bought a Revo S about a month ago and I'm really liking it. I have it paired with an Ugly Stick. I also have my grandfathers older Quantum e400 reel, on an old Lightning Rod. bought an Ambassadeur 5000c from a friend and now have it with an old Lightning rod IM6 of my dad's. (old menaing i dont know the age and t least 15 years old) Im thinking of getting a: 1. Berkely Cherrywood HD 2. Shimano Sojurn 3. Berkely Lightning rod Shock or the regular version. Thing is I've heard about Winn coming out with fishing grips. I'm very interested in getting these when they come out, as I like to play golf too and really like their grip style and quality. I'm not entirely sure how to remove the grip, so I think ill have to cut the old one off. That's why the cherrywood is my first choice-I've read that the grips aren't real cork. If I get a rod with real cork most likely I won't swap grips. Not wanting to spend over $50 right no. Any suggestions on rod or setup? thanks Quote
Tyler j Posted June 25, 2014 Posted June 25, 2014 First of all welcome, I personally haven't fished those rods I fish rods of a higher quality. I would recommend the duckett Ghost Quote

JaxBasser Posted June 25, 2014 Posted June 25, 2014 The lightning rod shocks are good rods for the $. Quote
Crashcarson Posted June 25, 2014 Author Posted June 25, 2014 Th The lightning rod shocks are good rods for the $. I like the Shock but i like the Regular version's grip more. Do you know the differences of the two? Quote
timsford Posted June 25, 2014 Posted June 25, 2014 the shocks have a softer tip to compensate for no stretch braided lines. I used mine with mono and flouro for reaction baits but they can be uses for other techniques too. You might want to use braid if you use one for plastics and jigs though because of the softer tip Quote
LMB KING Posted June 25, 2014 Posted June 25, 2014 you can find berkley rods at Walmart. their all good rods. My friend catch big 30 pound snook and 5+ pound peacock bass on them all the time. Never failed him. Quote
gramps50 Posted June 25, 2014 Posted June 25, 2014 Don't know where your located, Denny Dennis Sporting Goods in Fenton, Mo has Oddsey rods that normally run in the $50 range for 50% off. I have several of then and really like them. I have from an ultra light to a medium in spinning and a medium casting. For the money I don't think you can beat them. Quote
Mumbly Posted June 25, 2014 Posted June 25, 2014 Welcome to the site. Of the 3 rods you listed I would say that the Lightning shock would be the better choice. As timsford mentioned the lightning shock has a softer tip for using braid so the rod will be a moderate/fast from what I have seen. I also think the regular lightning rod work as well. Quote
Super User smalljaw67 Posted June 25, 2014 Super User Posted June 25, 2014 If you aren't going to use braid I'd suggest the lightning rod, not the shock but the regular version. They are pretty decent for what you pay and if you are using braid then the shock would be better. You got some good advice, the shock will prove difficult to get good hook sets if you are using mono and certain fluorocarbon lines because they have stretch and the shock has a slower taper to compensate for braid which has zero stretch. robster80 Posted June 25, 2014 Posted June 25, 2014 i still say Powell Diesel. u can get a 723 at fishranger for 49.99 Quote
Amarley Posted June 25, 2014 Posted June 25, 2014 Check out the fishing flea market on this forum. Sometimes you can get good used rods for cheap. I also would recommend looking at the Abu Garcia Vendettas. Sometimes you can find them for around $60. A 7' MH Fast action can handle about anything you want starting out. Quote
Super User ww2farmer Posted June 25, 2014 Super User Posted June 25, 2014 Of the rods you listed, lightning rod shock all day, every day. 1 Quote
Super User bigbill Posted June 25, 2014 Super User Posted June 25, 2014 Go to eBay and search for a LEWS speed stick. Some are $39 Quote
BassCats Posted June 25, 2014 Posted June 25, 2014 Out of the choices you offered I would suggest the Berkley lightning rods. these are comfortable and affordable. I still have one and use it daily, even though I also have some high end rods as well. Quote
BrianSnat Posted June 25, 2014 Posted June 25, 2014 I'll echo everyone who said the Berkely Lighting and Lightning Shock. I have a few and like them a lot. They are every bit as good as some rods that cost me triple what I paid for the Lightnings. I also like BPS Microlite and their Graphite Series , they also deliver a lot of rod for the money. Quote
