jerkbait joe Posted June 24, 2014 Posted June 24, 2014 Looking to get a new setup for panfish. Already set on the reel. A Pflueger President 6920. Undecided on the rod. Really like St. Croix. Thinking either a Premier 6'6" Ultralight fast action or Panfish series 6'9" Ultralight fast action. Any input? Quote
Super User Crestliner2008 Posted June 24, 2014 Super User Posted June 24, 2014 Well, certainly the St. Croix is a fine rod if you don't mind spending the money on it. However, you will not do a whole heck of a lot better than a B n' M 7' SHSS, in my opinion. And it will cost quite a bit less. Quote
brophog Posted June 25, 2014 Posted June 25, 2014 I like Pflueger President's but actually prefer a bit bigger reels. Smaller spinning reels create more problems. A 25 or 30 size of the same reel will likely still work fine. I like a 30 size with 4 or 6 lb line for such applications. For a casting application, either of those rods will work fine. Aside from the obvious slight size difference, I'm not sure what the difference is from specs, other than the handle. Quote
crazyjoeclemens Posted June 25, 2014 Posted June 25, 2014 I've been using a 6' ML Cherrywood for panfish and I really like it. I've been thinking about getting into those super long 9' rods they use for crappie, but I'm not sure about how to use em... Quote

I've been thinking about getting into those super long 9' rods they use for crappie, but I'm not sure about how to use em... Those long ultra lightweight rods are generally meant for spider rigging from a boat. They dont really have enough backbone to cast well. At least I've always found them to be very tricky to cast, in the best of circumstances. I do like about a 7 foot ultralight for small panfish, though. Light enough to cast, but still plenty manageable. Quote

Some guys will flip small tube jigs into thick brush piles and pull the slabs right out. I've never done it my self, but I'd like to try it sometime. I kinda need to find someone with some know-how to show me the ropes. In the mean time, I use that 6' ML Cherrywood to cast small crank baits, swim baits, and curly tail grubs. Quote
OntarioFishingGuy Posted June 28, 2014 Posted June 28, 2014 The panfish st croix series is a great rod from what I have heard. The fenwick elite tech river runner is also a great choice. Quote
Mike2841 Posted June 28, 2014 Posted June 28, 2014 I like the st croix ultra lights as well Also pan fish are a lot of fun to catch on fly rods. Quote
jerkbait joe Posted June 28, 2014 Author Posted June 28, 2014 I own several St.Croix Premier rods including a fly rod. They look and perform great. Think I will go with the panfishseries based on the guides...Pac Bay Minima versus aluminum oxide on the Premier. Quote
Super User FishTank Posted July 12, 2014 Super User Posted July 12, 2014 I have a St. Croix Avid ML that I love for panfish. It is a bit of overkill but it is a versatile set up. I have caught a lot of large mouth, perch and crappie with this set up as well. Quote
Kevin22 Posted July 13, 2014 Posted July 13, 2014 Looking to get a new setup for panfish. Already set on the reel. A Pflueger President 6920. Undecided on the rod. Really like St. Croix. Thinking either a Premier 6'6" Ultralight fast action or Panfish series 6'9" Ultralight fast action. Any input? I have the 6'9 panfish. Great rod. 6920 will be too small for it though. a 1000 series shimano or 25 series pflueger is the correct size reel. If you are already decided on a 6920 then you will need a 5' to 6' rod. Any longer and it will not balance at all. Been there, tried that. I seriously can not say enough good things about the 6'9 ul panfish. A panfisherman's dream rod. Quote
jerkbait joe Posted July 14, 2014 Author Posted July 14, 2014 I have a 6925 President.I'll get the rod first and try the reel on it to see what you mean. If I agree I'll just get a new 6925. Quote
I.rar Posted July 14, 2014 Posted July 14, 2014 My UL outfit consists of a president 25 and a Daiwa procyon 6' UL. They can be had fairly cheap on fleabay. Quote

I about fall over if I pick up my bass rod after handling either of these 2 setups. Quote
