So I picked up a Speed Spool for $69.  Then I see the Laser Speed Spool and then there is a Tournament speed spool then a BB1 Speed Spool, then a BB1 Pro speed spool and a BB2 speed spool, then a tournament MG speed spool, and a Speed Spool SS1.  I cannot for the life of me tell a difference in all of their reels.  A new marketing scheme with better names to tell apart the levels and quality of the reels would do them a huge favor.

can someone do me a favor and break it down for me?

I might be able to shed a little light on the subject, although there are others on here that REALLY know their LEWS reels.

The lazer line is the entry level reel. Then comes the speed spool. This reel I consider to be a better entry level reel for around $99. Then comes the Lews Tournament MG. This reel is a great magnetic brake reel. Next comes the Tournament Pro. For many their search for a great reel ends here. (I agree... ;) LOL..) This reel utilizes both centri and mag breaks. Then you have what I consider specialty types of reels in the BB1 and BB1 pro series. These reels introduce bigger spools and some pretty impressive casting abilities from what I hear. Others can be more helpful, since i do not own either reel. Next come the super duty. This reel has nice winching power for specific applications and then comes the " rare air" series which is the team pro series. Capt Bob is very well versed with these reels. I can't touch these reels... LOL... Hopefully this helps a little.

so all of them are speed spools?  the difference is laser, tournament pro, etc?  One of the main reasons I have stayed away cause the marketing of their reels is dumb and I cannot figure out which one I am looking at.

Yeah they are all under the Lew's Speed Spool line-up.. just different models.

A speed spool for $69 was probably the laser mg.

It was the $99.99 but was on sale for $89.99 and had a $20 rebate.  I figured it would work for a backup 7 gear ratio reel.  Trying my first lew's.

Laser speed spool 79.99

Speed spool 99.99

Tournament mg 129.99

Tournament 149.99

Bb1 149.99

Super Duty 179.99

Bb1 Pro 199.99

Tournament pro 199.99

Team Lews Gold 239.99

Team Lews Pro 299.99

That is the order from lowest to highest. The models are differnt and allow you to pick something more specifically oriented toward your needs.

Want something for cranking?-bb1

Frogging-super duty

All purpose?-tournament pro

Better finish and all aluminum?-team gold

Go to TW  and look up Lews reels. They have a write up on each of the Lews reels. I can understand your confusion, but once you start understanding them, they are each unique. Goodluck!! ;)

there term "speed spool" harkens back to the original lew's reels from the 70s...it's just used now for name recognition and branding.

now, anything with a "laser" designation means it uses a graphite frame...avoid! a solid, one-piece aluminum frame is the first building block of a quality reel that will last.

anything with an "MG" means that the braking system is magnetic only. the BB1 reels are centrifugal only. the rest of the lineup are dual-braking, incorporating a simple magnetic brake system along with a simple centrifugal brake system.

the BB1 series have their own frame that is different from the non-BB1 lew's and feature a width reminiscent of the shimano E and G series. the main difference between the BB1 and the BB1 pro is the sophistication of the centrifugal brake system.

between all the others, the differences are in finishes, materials, a gear and spool configurations.

Things can be very simple, just purchase Shimano or Daiwa. :eyebrows:

Sounds like the scene on the bus in Forest Gump when his new buddy lists all the way you can cook shrimp.

Go to the Lews site and do some research.

Lews makes a nice reel. Only problem I have found is that I have to move the break selection to 8.

Only if you know the difference between each one of their models, and what each one is designed to do also,,,,,,Lew's is pretty basic if you can read, and know the difference in components and gear ratio's, they even offer a break system to satisfy everyone, no matter what kind you prefer!! :Victory:

From one model choice to the next, they all hold line, but only when you understand the purpose of each component used to make a certain model, and the advantages of each, can you make an EDUCATED CHOICE!!! regardless who makes it!! As is with Lew's, you can find a reel that is design to do a certain task as good or better than most reels made today, if you can't decide what a particular reel is designed for, man up and ask, plenty here to offer help!! But anyone that wants to imply that Diawa, Shimano, Lew's or any company make's one reel to do everything better than all the others that's ,,,,,  ,,,,,, well it just aint so!!   :thumbsup1:
