Hey all, I mainly fish from the bank, usually beating through the  brush. A lot of times I am casting from tricky areas. I have always used a wally world special, but its definitely time for an upgrade. Not sure if a 7ft rod would be too much, but I really don't know what I am missing.

Basically looking for a spinning combo for about 150. All I do is wacky worm and topwater frog, served me well and it so much fun :tongue8: . Appreciate any guidance

i started the exact same way as you mention..

7ft is not "too much"..but in tight quarters i used a 6 1/2 ft. and didn't feel like i was "missing" anything.

for reels...i would definitley recommend a Pflueger President (can be bought for $60, max) and then you have close to a $100 for a rod.

you can get any number of good rods for $100.  i would go with a MH.  it is much more versatile....especially in the long run.. as for length. 6 1/2 or 7ft..whichever you prefer.

do you have a Bass Pro or a Dick's close to you?

If you are looking for a spinning reel check out the Shimano Sahara reels.  I have two of them and they are my go to spinning reels for bass fishing.  I'm really impressed with the Sahara reels.

I'm beating the banks every morning and I wouldn't use anything longer than 6' myself. If by bank you mean open park land or concrete then the skies the limit but I fight thru jungle and underhand flip or pitch most of my casts in very tight overgrown spots. Use what makes sense for you and where you like to fish.

Carbonlite and Pflueger President is what I always suggest for people in the price point. Fantastic set up, that you won't be wanting to replace any time soon.

I bank fish alot as well unless I'm with my brother in law. Pflueger President is an awesome reel that won't break the bank and mine is paired up with a $25 Berkley cherrywood rod. Pulled many bass with zero issues the last 2 years.

A little longer rod is nice, especially with what you want in a spinning rod.  For all around spinning, go with a medium action, if you really want to throw frogs on it, go with a Medium heavy.  IMO, if your throwing frogs or fishing heavy duty, your better off with a baitcast setup.  But anyways, a longer rod improves hookset power, and also gives you a little more leverage when fighting a hard pulling bass that's trying to get into heavy cover and shake the hook.  -- A longer rod comes in handy.  I would recommend a Shimano Sedona reel ($50) paired with a *** *** rod ($99 most places)  This combo cant be beat for the price, and go with the medium for spinning, you wont be disappointed.

I bank fish a lot too and habe two different spinning set ups i use depending on whether im in an open spot or with trees hanging over me. In open spots i use a powell deisel i bought for 55 shipped from tw and a daiwa exceller 2500. Total cost was well under 150 shipped bc i got the reel nib off another forum way cheaper than retail but even at retail you can get this combo for around 150. The rod is 6'10" though so i use a shorter combo around trees and for jerkbaits or anything i work with a downward rod motion so i dont hit the ground. my shorter combo is a 6'3" elite tech smallmouth with a shimano sahara. It would be over your budget retail but cabelas has the rod right now for 99 and you can find saharas for 50 or so on forums or ebay used or can go with another reel like the daiwa regal or pfleuger president. I have an okuma rtx i ordered from walmart.com on the way i picked up for 73 bucks to replace the sahara but its been a great reel. I have to try a 6.6 ounce 30 size reel wirh 13 lbs of drag that gets great reviews on saltwater forums. You could pair one of these with a deisel or abu vendetta or veritas for under your budget too. Sorry i wrote a book lol just wanted to lwt you know there are tons of options.

Wacky worm and frog? Kind of two ends of the spectrum but it can certainly be done. For versatility you can beat a medium power fast action. If you are stomping through serious brush it won't matter if the rod is 5'6 or 7'6 but I generally don't go longer than 7'.

Perfect combo for the price range.  I have no desire to upgrade the president.  A few weeks ago my champion extreme broke which dobyns replaced (great customer service and awesome rod) so I used my carbonlite.  I have to say the carbonlite performed great.  Sensitive, light and casts senkos a mile.

I think it is going to come down to personal preference after some trial and error on rod length. My personal experience from bank fishing over the years has me selecting rod length depending on what I am fishing. For example, I fish a lot of topwater and started out with a 7ft and when I am working a spook or other walking bait I tend to work the rod with downward twitches. Being only 5'7", I found the 7ft too long to work the bait right unless I was standing on a tall rock with more downward clearance (much like fishing in a boat). I switched to a 6'6" which seemed better but now have gone a 6' which works great for me. Of coarse the longer rods pick up slack quicker, cast a bit further and perhaps help with hook setting but just like anything....there are always trade-offs. Just depends on what you are willing to sacrifice to make it all work as best it can. :)

Agreed, too many folks throw out advise to get a long rod, expecting that everyone, like them, fishes off the bow of a bass boat.

BPS Extreme rod in 7 foot medium heavy for both spinning and baitcasting.

Match it up with any Shimano 2000 or 2500 size reel of your choice.

Baitcaster 12 pound mono and spinning 8 pound flouro.

Bring needle nose pliers with you at all times.

Have fun.

My preference is a 6'6" MH Spinning rod and reel combination.  I am an Abu Garcia guy and for that price you can get an Orra S spinning combo.  I own 4 which I use in tournaments.  I love them.
