tying jigs

anyone ever do this? what have you used for skirts? either from a fly tying store or a home craft place, what have you used? i have never really been good at fishing a jig and i am going to give a go at it this early spring/winters end. i have a ton of weedless jigheads just like you would see on a booya or an enticer but no skirts. just looking for tips anyone know of any informative "bass plug' tying sites?

my dad is an expert at fly trying, and i will give him jig heads so i can have hair jigs, and he uses a dark greenish deerhaor for a crawfish, they are dynamite in the rivers here. paired with a yum chunk. mmm mmmmm

www.livingrubber.com has been a good source for silicone and rubber skirt material. I sold off about 100 yards of rubber skirt material in 10 colors and the jig maker was happy to get the supply since rubber is hard to get in a square cut. Rubber deteriorates and needs to be retied every 2 years or so, but silicone doesn't have the action that rubber does. Silicone is great for colors and patterns, though I'm not sure the fish care that much. Last year I tied the following combos with rubber and caught fish all season: black, purple and kelly green; black, green and brown; all black; black, blue and lt blue.

Flashabou is great for irridescent hair and Cabelas, Jannes Netcraft, Stamina, and others sell it on their sites. Great for making flash jigs.

Marabou is nice, as is deer hair. It comes down to how much flutter you think you need in a hair jig. Buck tail has done fine for me, especially if I add a bit of flashabou. Some people use rabbit hair, which I equate with the fineness of feathers and rarely use feathers except as an attractor to the rear hook of a popper.

I usually tie flies and hair jigs. I use several different materials depending on the action I am looking for. For example, if I am looking for and ultra realistic action with a slow fall I will use a combination of marabou, CDC, and bucktail. But if I need a jig that has a fast fall and a realistic breathing action I will use bucktail and CDC feathers. I will also tie some flashabou in their to give it some flash appeal. Basically you must use a variety of different materials to achieve certain actions, and you'll eventually find that one combo that just plain works.

I use silicone and living rubber for all of my bass jigs.  I really like the looks of the barbwire silicone.  It's more expensive  then standard silicone strips.  All I make are bass jigs. now if your talking hair jigs craft stores might have the stuff you need.  most of the time bucktail is used or marabou.  its more time consuming to tie also, but does give you a different style of jig.
