paparock Posted February 28, 2006 Posted February 28, 2006 Since I want to get into making my own skirted jigs and feather jigs; I would like some recomendations as to the best bench, holder, and where to get the best supplies that I will need. I have zero idea what I am doing at this point so HELP PLEASE! Quote
Triton21 Posted March 1, 2006 Posted March 1, 2006 I have been doing it for years. Caught my personal best SM (6 1/2) on a 1/16 oz black/blue jig I made. It is a lot of satisfaction to catch fish on your own bait. I would start out with a Hot Pot and Do-it molds. Janns Netcraft is a good place to start. Barlows is also a good source. If you are just going to tie a few at a time a inexpejsive fly vice will do. I recomend Owner light wire Jig hooks as they are super sharp and penatrate extremely well on Hookset. If you can't find Owners Gamagatsu will work. There are a lot of little tricks you will learn as you go along. Always heat your mold, Blacken the inside of your mold to make your jigs release easier, ect. ect. ect. If you have any problems I have seen a lot of guys on here pour their own stuff and someone will answer any question you have. Kelley Quote
senko_77 Posted March 8, 2006 Posted March 8, 2006 try using marabou. it is so lifelike in the water. its like lving rubber in the feather world. Quote
Siebert Outdoors Posted March 8, 2006 Posted March 8, 2006 You can basically spend as much as you want to on a stand. Here are a few http://www.jannsnetcraft.com/fly-tying-vises/ To make a silicone skirt or living rubber skirt with a collar I just use a skirt making tool that looks like a pair of reverse pliers. paparock Posted March 8, 2006 Author Posted March 8, 2006 Thanks for the responses everyone. What is a good price range to get good equipment without going to cheap or spending needlessly more than I would need to unless going commercial? :-? Quote
Siebert Outdoors Posted March 8, 2006 Posted March 8, 2006 If it was me I wouldnt invest more than 50 bucks in it. Just make sure the size hooks you use will be acceptable by the vice and the vice has a rotating head. Quote
