Bruce424 Posted June 23, 2014 Posted June 23, 2014 Okay. Dont tell anyone but I skipped work to go fishing at a local lake. First time in a while to get to a lake before first light. I was excited too. Started out with some topwater. An ar lure. Long cast to deep water since I was fishing from sure. Maybe ten cast in... sluuuurrrrpp!! No jump or splash just weight...I mean weight! I had it on for maybe 10 seconds. Then it jumps. A really good size bass And throws the lure... now I was using the wrong setup "med/heavy fast im8 graphite. Usually my jig rod. Just the rod I had with me. Hindsight lingered with me for a couple hours. Quote
Super User BassinLou Posted June 23, 2014 Super User Posted June 23, 2014 Yeah it hurts when the big one's get away... learn from the experience and try again, that's all we can do. Quote
Mccallister25 Posted June 23, 2014 Posted June 23, 2014 It happens to us all, at some point in time. It hurts. At least you got to see the beast! Quote
Big-O Posted June 24, 2014 Posted June 24, 2014 Yep, I'd consider that one a learning curve and sounds like you've got it figured out too... That's what keeps us going Quote

Super User Sam Posted June 24, 2014 Super User Posted June 24, 2014 The more you fish the more you will lose the big ones. I was fishing off my neighbor's pontoon boat two weeks ago catching one and two pounders and not paying attention to my line or knots. A big one hit my shaky head and took off under the pontoon boat. I could not turn her and she just made a run for it. The line popped and she was gone. My neighbor tells me that his grandson nailed a very large one, over five pounds, the week before. I will always wonder what size that bass was that I could not turn her when she ran. I could tell you other stories but I try to forget the big ones I have lost. Quote
Super User Bankbeater Posted June 24, 2014 Super User Posted June 24, 2014 You might have missed that bass, but now you know where it lives. 1 Quote

Hindsight lingered with me for a couple hours. I know how you feel, on Sunday I went out on my kayak for the first time. It was a slow day that day, I had a few bites but only landed 1 after 4 hours. I threw a spinnerbait (3/8 - White/Cht) and as I was bringing it in, I felt weight..just weight, without thinking (I thought I hit weeds or trees/brush, the lake is filled with them, I was also in a state of wow what a slow day)...anyway when I jerked it my MH/F Veritas 7'3 rod was bent over real good and felt a big TUG...I was like SHOOOOOOOT! In the back of my mind I was like I didn't set the hook properly so instinctively without thinking properly, I placed slack in the line while trying to load the road...it jumped and went off. In hindsight when I tried to rip it out of the so called trees/brush, I probably set the hook. I was so mad, I didn't get to fully see how big it was..but if the bend of my rod was any indication..it had to be a big one. Quote
reb67 Posted June 25, 2014 Posted June 25, 2014 I feel your pain but in my short bass fishing avengers I know it happens and it sucks. My oh crap moment was last summer when my nephew and I was fishing a small cove with a deep drop off. I threw a senko over the backside of the grass and when I popped it out of the grass and let it fall along the edge of the grass my line started coming right at me by the time I caught up to it she was under the boat. I got the line tight but never got a good hook set she came to the top of water and my nephew couldn't get the net under in time she spit my green/pumpkin purple flake senko right back at me. My poor nephew ( 11 years old ) was so upset about it he still thinks it was is fault. I just tell him it happens and its just a fish there will be more.. Based on pics and my own PB I am guessing 8 to 10 pounder her mouth looked like a open 5 gallon bucket. That fish still haunts both of our dreams we talk about it every time we see each other. Sometime I wish we never would have seen it. Quote
