Bass2124 Posted June 23, 2014 Posted June 23, 2014 I need a little reassurance or comforting for a very unfortunate mishap (or stupid depending on how insensitive you want to be) that I made yesterday while fishing. I let a $250 rod and reel set up fly out of my hands and drift away and sink to the bottom of a river. I was in about 15 feet of water and had no luck trying to retrieve it. I am still sick over it. It was a Daiwa Balistic T3 with a Fenwick Silverhawk rod. Awesome setup and I had only used it about 4 times. I basically went to make a very long and hard cast and I think the reel came flying off the reel seat which caused it to jar out of my hands. I really don't know what happened other than it was jarred out of my hands pretty violently. I may also have caught the lure, which was a frog with tandem hooks, on the side of the windshield of my boat. It really felt like someone literally ripped the rod right out of my hands. I have never experienced such a thing and I have been fishing since I was 3. Please someone tell me they have done something crazy like this so I can feel better about myself ! On a positve note the kids and I caught 42 Bass in about 3 hours of fishing with 3-18 inch smallmouth one weighing over 3 1/2 pounds. Quote
Super User F14A-B Posted June 23, 2014 Super User Posted June 23, 2014 These are somewhat expensive accidents/ misfortunes,etc... It's not unheard of, you won't be the last to do it. If you marked the area... Try dredging and you may find it... Are you scuba licensed ? Well guy hold you head up, and get out you're wallet! Best wishes... Quote
Bass2124 Posted June 23, 2014 Author Posted June 23, 2014 I wonder how far that thing drifted down river before it got caught up. It was fairly rocky where I lost it and may have fetched up. I know exactly where I lost it but with river current and the bouyency of the rod it may have gone quite a ways before it came to rest. I pulled up a rod that I hooked a few years ago but it was a $20 walmart setup. Someone my do the same and be in for a really nice treat! Quote
Ima Bass Ninja Posted June 23, 2014 Posted June 23, 2014 Last year during the bassmaster event on Alabama river I think one if the pros had his combo jerked out of his hand by a fish. I believe he was moving from the front to the back of the boat and just lost his grip. Rod gone! Stuff happens to the best of em. Quote
Smallmouth Hunter Posted June 23, 2014 Posted June 23, 2014 You might've caught the lure on one of the guides and when you went to cast, the rod went flying. Quote
Super User Long Mike Posted June 23, 2014 Super User Posted June 23, 2014 Doo Doo occurs. You have my sympathy. 1 Quote
Hogsticker Posted June 23, 2014 Posted June 23, 2014 Towards the end of a long 10 hour day on the water my father in law made a cast and lost his grip. He sent his GLX and Stradic sailing through the air. He is getting up there, was feeling fatigued, and simply lost his grip (or his mind). This was after countless casts pounding the shoreline with jerkbaits. Luckily I was able to make a good cast and hooked his line with my trebles just as the combo started to sink. We also take our dogs with us most times. I made a cast and hooked his Australian Shepherd in the thigh with a crankbait. Snapped the tip off my Cumara. Poor dog. What a fiasco that was. I remember one winter we were out when it was like 17 degrees. I was standing on the back of the boat taking a leak. He wasn't paying attention to what I was doing, rather that we were getting close to the beach. At this point he decided to gun it and sent me flying with my junk in my hand. I managed to jump backwards, back into the boat landing on three rods, two of which shattered into several pieces. That's just the tip of the iceberg. Yes, we all have done some dumb s**t. 1 Quote

Super User smalljaw67 Posted June 23, 2014 Super User Posted June 23, 2014 March 2013, me and my buddy were out exactly 35 minutes, there was a stiff breeze blowing with the sir temp just barely 40 so it felt like it was in the low 30s. Well I had a spinning rod in hand as I know my hands are not good in cold as my cancer treatment caused severe neuropathy in my hands and throwing a palmed casting set up was a possibility. My buddy let his go however, a MBR843C GLX with a Shimano Calais on it and what makes it worse is the Calais has been discontinued. $700 on the bottom of a lake and we were dredging the bottom with deep divers with no luck, the wind blew us off the spot really fast and the water was high and there was a good current moving, we tried for 2 hours before finally giving up. Things happen and remember, equipment can be replace eventually, be glad you had a trip in which you caught good fish and nobody got hurt. Quote

Great point smalljaw. The thought of jumping overboard occurred for about 1 second until I looked at my 2 kids standing beside me with rods in their hands. Making memories is what is all about. As painful as this memory is now in a few years the tears will turn into a memorable story and a few chuckles. Quote
Super User K_Mac Posted June 23, 2014 Super User Posted June 23, 2014 I can assure you that if you fish much stuff will get lost, broken, and worn out. Losing a combo stinks, but the joy we get from fishing makes the occasional malfunction worthwhile. Quote
David D. Posted June 23, 2014 Posted June 23, 2014 If it is any help; I'm pretty sure that Tackle Warehouse has the T3 and T3 Ballistic on pretty good sales right now. http://www.***.com/searchresults.html#T3 Sorry, I can't hyperlink that address from my phone. Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted June 23, 2014 Posted June 23, 2014 If misery loves company, a customer told me about his father in law accidentally kicking an NRX Loomis and Daiwa Steez over board never to be seen again. You not first or last to lose tackle this way. Quote

You not first or last to lose tackle this way. True. Lots of us break or lose gear overboard. Many years ago my brother tipped over while floating a river. Not only lost rods and reels, but all the tackle he had with him. Personally I have fallen in a pile of rocks and destroyed a $290 rod...not to mention some nasty brushburns and bruises. I know it doesn't help you, but....... Quote
JayKumar Posted June 23, 2014 Posted June 23, 2014 I have done that and worse -- like breaking a $100+ rod to save a $4 bait.... It stinks, but you will get over it! Quote
alexandboi Posted June 23, 2014 Posted June 23, 2014 Well the same thing happened to me with a X7 and Met if it makes you feel better, luckily I was only in 3 feet of water... Still sucked though haha. Quote
Super User S Hovanec Posted June 23, 2014 Super User Posted June 23, 2014 I've heard of some people having success dredging the area with a chain stringer with all of the hooks opened up. I love this story, cause it wasn't my rod. I just delivered a SCV drppshot rod to a customer and he put his brand spanking new Stella on it. When he showed up, it didn't even have line on it yet! I took him out on Erie to try it out. 4 miles off shore, in 50'+ of water, I hear a small splash followed by a big splash. I turn around in time to see his combo about 2' under the surface and him half way in the water grabbing for it. He managed to scoop deep enough to get under the rod and save it. Needless to say, it didn't float like the SCV/Steez casting combo I built for him a few years earlier. Quote
Super User WIGuide Posted June 25, 2014 Super User Posted June 25, 2014 I've got a friend who managed to lose a a fairly pricey rod with a Shimano Chronarch MG on it in a tournament. I'm not 100% sure how it happened but he marked it and tried to get it back to no avail. One time while fishing with my Dad, we were cranking a tree in about 10 feet of water. I caught one and he came back to net it leaving his bait in the water slightly at the end of his retrieve when he dropped it to grab the net. A fish must have followed it up because when he turned around after netting my fish the rod was gone. He got lucky later that day by hooking his line with another crankbait. My dad took a friend fishing once who ended up throwing his rod out into the water. My dad turned around to see him sitting there with a mystified look on his face sitting in the seat without a rod before the guy explained what happened. First tournament I ever fished, I was fishing with a buddy and we tried to cut through a shallow canal to save time. My friend grabbed something off the deck and it flipped my $300 combo right over the side. (most expensive at the time) Luckily the water was only about a foot deep and i reached down and grabbed it. A few weeks ago I went fishing with the same guy who dumped my combo over the side. I grabbed a rod off the deck and the line hooked under another reel handle ($350 combo) and flipped it over the side. Lucky for me the tip caught under the ram mount for my locator and a guide hit the rub rail which held it up enough to just sit there while I bent down and grabbed it. You are not the first or last person to do this type of thing. Quote
Super User ww2farmer Posted June 25, 2014 Super User Posted June 25, 2014 I'll try my best to be reassuring..... Yup that was stupid, don't do it again..... How did I do? Quote
