RMcDuffee726 Posted June 23, 2014 Posted June 23, 2014 Alright, here is the scenario. My friend caught a nice 6.1 pound Larry on a white 4 inch swim-bait (pretty sure it was a 4 inch). It is the standard Bass Pro large, white, 5 in a pack, with the hook already made into it swim-baits. Anyways, this kid hooks up to a goliath of a fish on this bait at 4:30 in the afternoon on off shore lily pads in probably 10 feet of water. Now I am going on Tuesday and will be on the water fishing at around 5 o'clock am. I am wondering if I should throw the exact same thing (Obviously went out and purchased the exact same bait). I'm truly curious if that bait will hook into a huge fish like it did even though the time that the lure is being fished is different. I really appreciate any of your responses! Cheers! Also this goes with any lure as well. Quote
Mccallister25 Posted June 23, 2014 Posted June 23, 2014 Theres only one way to find out. If youve already made the purchase, why not throw one? Theres no "constant" in fishing. That coulda been his day. Right place, at the right time, at the right window of opportunity. Now if that bait matches what the fish are feeding on in said water, theres a chance you may hook into one. Find the fish, and throw a few things at em. You never know what the day could hold for you. 1 Quote

WVbassin87 Posted June 23, 2014 Posted June 23, 2014 BigBlock hit the nail on the head. if you have confidence that lure will work, throw it first. if it doesn't, decide ahead of time your preference for the lures you'll try next. fish behave differently all the time, so what worked then may not have worked even 5 minutes before or after, then again it may work all day long. for example, there are days my confidence gear slays em, and other days in the same spot at the same time of day where o get skunked. best of luck to you 1 Quote
Super User Felix77 Posted June 23, 2014 Super User Posted June 23, 2014 So ... let me get this straight ... Someone catches a lunker on a bait you don't have. You go buy said bait. NOPE ... never happened to me. LOL Seriously - At least you know it attracts fish in that body of water but don't forget that there are other variables at work here. Time of day, weather and the way they were fishing it for starters. Fish it and see if you can replicate the result. Have fun! 1 Quote
Super User smalljaw67 Posted June 23, 2014 Super User Posted June 23, 2014 The biggest mistake is to lock yourself onto that one lure. Remember, lures are tools and based on the time difference the conditions are going to be different. Now, there is a possibility that it will work for you, where I live the swim bait bite goes away when you hit summer but it doesn't go away entirely. Low light conditions are where I will throw a swim bait and anywhere there is current. I will also leave you with this, since you are fishing vegetation, try using a swim jig with a 3.5" to 4" swim bait on it as a trailer, baits like a Gene Larew sweet swimmer, Keitech Easy Shiner, or KVD swim-n-shiner will work great for that. 1 Quote
FrogFreak Posted June 23, 2014 Posted June 23, 2014 This is a great question. Yes, I'd throw the lure. I struggle with getting "locked" into fishing a certain way and when I see someone else catching them a different way, I have to force myself to change. My wife was killing them on her purple worm one day and I had to swallow the pride and switch up. Here's the thing. Most times I decide what my strategy is going to be the night before I go fishing. The key to my successful days are when the strategy works or when I quickly access that the strategy isn't working and I change it up. I struggle on those days when I fail to switch it up and fail to listen to what all the external signs are telling me. Water temp, time of year, surface activity, cover present etc. Anything that can give me insight is valuable. In this case, your buddy's success is just one of those variables. You should take it into consideration. You know that guy that always throws the same lure in the same color? Don't be that guy. Sure he has great days but he also gets skunked. Note: I can be that guy sometimes. I've wasted whole mornings throwing a frog when I shouldn't. This year I'm working on doing less of that sort of thing. 1 Quote

I use to do that as well, but know I'm actually switching it up. Gotta do what the fish are telling you and not what you want to do. Thanks for the advice, I appreciate it! Quote
