Fish_Whisperer Posted June 22, 2014 Posted June 22, 2014 So today was a "first" day for me. Been wanting a change of pace for a little while now, and was invited to Lake Greenwood (first time fishing there) to do some Striper fishing(another first). Well, didn't land any Stripers, but I did land this for another first... 1 Quote

Fish_Whisperer Posted June 22, 2014 Author Posted June 22, 2014 Looks good! Id like to catch a gar. How was the fight? I wish I had a grand story full of thrashing and gnashing of teeth, but I don't.... he took a minnow 20 yards from the bank and ran, I set the hook on the very tip of his beak, not even inside the mouth, under the "chin". He ran left bout 20 feet then proceeded to run straight at me and dang near beached himself. I swung him up and as soon as I had him by the belly, the hook fell off. Quote

jigabooyah Posted July 9, 2014 Posted July 9, 2014 I have caught 5 gar this year on night crawlers and a 4/0 circle hook. I have read over and over that it is hard to get a good hook set. Tell that to the gar. Quote
Super User Catch and Grease Posted July 9, 2014 Super User Posted July 9, 2014 The only way I can catch gar is with a circle hook and letting them swallow live bait really... Quote
Kevin22 Posted July 10, 2014 Posted July 10, 2014 They are very hard to hook. And hard to keep hooked. This one ran like a torpedo shot out of a submarine. 42.5". Still looking for a 4 footer. Quote
Super User iabass8 Posted July 10, 2014 Super User Posted July 10, 2014 Hard to hook????. I've caught (yes caught in that toothy jaw) more of those annoying, bony, pieces of trash on a squarebill and swimbaits than I've snagged /w a lipless in the spring on the river. Especially when it floods. Quote

Especially when it floods. They get those trebles wedged around their beaks and tangled in their teeth a lot it seems. Plus the extra hook points occasionally find a spot soft enough to penetrate, usually by the end of their beaks it seems. We have monster longnose gar in a lot of our lakes. The big females fight really hard, jumping and even tailwalking at times. I've caught some big ones. They're really fun to snag when they're spawning. Personally I'd rather bowfish for them though Several years ago my buddy shot a 48.5 incher and I shot a 52" incher the same night. Lots of people eat them around here and say they're one of the best fish there is to eat. Quote

When I haphazardly snag them, they fight for a short burst and then it's just a game of "let's see if the lipless pulls out before he gets to the boat." I will say that I have caught one on a Yellow Magic just recently that did do some pretty cirque du soleil stuff. The fight was a decent but I think it had to do more /w me trying to get him in as quick as possible while praying the 20$ topwater didn't get bite off. You KS folk and your Gar eating ways scare me.
