Will look for schematics Online tomorrow and tear into reel, but thought I would ask here first.  Picked up a Whisker SS1300 over the winter that is in pretty good cosmetic condition.  Although a bit dirty...I expect from sitting idle.  Today I picked up a Smallmouth rod I had set aside for me during Cabela's recent sale.  Put the 2 together today for a little fishing.  Although the reel casts very well it has a couple problems.  First thing I noticed was that the spool has about a 1/16 of an inch (or slightly more) play....pushing and pulling the spool.  This is more than twice what any of my other spinning reels have including a Penn reel that is over 30 years old and several other Daiwas that are no longer in production.

Second is the drag.  It stutters.  Pulling line out feels like it is bouncing over teeth (or something) as the spool turns.  You can see the spool stopping as it goes over each "bump".  At the end today it was making a clicking noise on the spool's downward movement.  It doesn't make this noise when there is no load on the reel.  These reels are noted for having one of the best drag's in the business.  I can only assume the previous owner took it apart and either didn't put it together correctly, or left a part out when he re-assembled it.

I have as SS1600 which I can't check as it stays in Florida, but to the best of my memory is exhibits none of these problems.  Nor does the SS1600 (also in Florida) I bought my brother-in-law for his birthday.  At least he never said anything about it not feeling right, and all he uses is spinning reels.

So any ideas what could be wrong?  Although in the old days I took spools off to grease them, I haven't had one apart in probably 30 years or more.  I wouldn't know what to look for without a schematic.

Thanks.

I would definitely try to check the reel against the schematic. You might try pulling the spool off and cleaning and check for wear on any of the parts. I had one of these for 14 years and only cleaned and did maintenance twice the whole time i had it. When i sold it to help pay some bills it worked as good as the day i bought it. I know this doesnt help much with your problem but it has to have something worn out or out of place. These are the most bulletproof reels ever designed IMHO

Sounds as if the spool isn't sitting properly on the shaft. Unscrew the drag knob and take the spool off. Have a look at the locating pin on the shaft to make sure it isn't damaged and have a quick look at the stack of drag washers in the spool. If you can see where the pin on the shaft locates on the spool check the spool isn't damaged there. If all appears OK re-assemble and test. I'm guessing the spool hasn't been put on the reel correctly or there is some damage.

Sounds like it's missing a washer of some sort under the spool

Drag has been sitting for who knows how long, needs fresh drag grease after proper cleaning. Surely the whole reel should be stripped and maintained since you don't know how it was taken care of. alantani.com or fishingkhaki both have tutorials on how to strip and over haul the SS. Also look into replacing the drag washers as they probably were stored with the drag set tight ruining them.

Here ya go http://www.mikesreelrepair.com/schematics/albums/daiwa/Daiwa_SS1300.pdf

See what if anything is missing or misassembled. Clean the drag and grease with some Cals or Shimano drag grease. Call or email if you need help.

Thanks Mike.  I couldn't find my reel on alantani.com.  Didn't get to check fishingkhaki as my oldest grandson was uploading video to youtube, and my computer was running as fast as a glacier in January.  :sad78:

EDIT:  Which reel do I look at for the correct schematic.  Couldn't find an SS Tournament reel.  http://www.mikesreelrepair.com/schematics/thumbnails.php?album=8
