Let's talk anything to do with squarebills!

Anything from line, rod, reel, techniques etc...

Somebody start the discussion!

Picked up my first ones yesterday and haven't had a chance to try them yet.  Based on the depth of one of the ponds I frequently fish, I grabbed a KVD 1.0 and 1.5

They have been working great lately! I've been throwing the strike king series 1 (similar to the KVD 1.5) in sexy sunfish. The key is to bang it off any sort of structure or rip/rap so it deflects hard, and they will smash it. Currently using a 7'MF but losing a lot of fish 3/4 way in, so I'm going to switch to a 7' MM as soon as money allows. Using a 7:1:1 lews spooled with 14# sufix seige, but going to switch the line as it is getting chewed up pretty bad.

Most people will say to throw it to cover and when you feel it hit something to stop and let it float up, I've been doing the opposite. When fishing rip/rap, the second I feel it hit something I crank as fast as I can for 2 turns so the crank darts off to the side real quick. That is when most of my hits happen.

What specific rod are you using that is a MF? I use a berkly cherrywood rod that is a 6'6 MF and it works good for my needs , but every company's MF will be different...

Its an old quantum tour. Has the perfect action while fishing but just not enough give to keep them hooked up, especially when fishing in current.

I've been doing well lately on a local pond with a Bomber Square A and a KVD 1.0

Experiment with rattle vs silent vs one knocker. Also experiment with colors as well. I'm a huge fan of anything chrome they work great on my home lakes. Check out high end cranks vs low price as well. I've found the xcite xb1 to be a great lucky craft 1.5 drs imitator for example.square bills can load the boat quick and their fun to fish. Tight lines!

My dedicated squarebill rod is the TBC78MHM. Its a little unconventional compared to what most people use (7 to 7'2 in length). I prefer it because of the leverage, I throw my square bills into some nasty stuff.

Do you change the hooks on those Bombers? I find the ones that come with it a tad on the small side so I bump them up a size for better hook ups...

Been using them a lot more the last year or so. Have had good luck with the KVD 1.5, Bomber Square A, and the Xcalibur XCS. I recently pick up 6 Lucky Craft ones for $5 each on clearance at Dicks and I'm gonna give them a try soon.

I throw mine on a 7'1 M/F *** Black with a 6.4:1 Revo S.

Was gonna try my hand at fishing them on my last trip, but the pond I chose was insanely grassy. I even pulled in grass on my buzzbaits!

Lucky Strike Rick Clunn in copper perch... Awesome square bill! My buddy and I were out from 9:30pm to almost midnight Thursday and killing them on square bills fishing the lighted docks and sea walls...just make sure you bring a head lamp really hard to re-tie just using light from your cell phone !!

I fished from 7am to 6pm today and square bills were the only baits that produced fish for me all day.  I threw a LC RC 2.5 in American Shad and a R2S Biggie in the larger size, Real Sunfish color.  I would reel the baits as fast as I could and pause it after hitting cover.  They would slam it on the pause.

I use a 7' MH fast action rod that has a little slower tip than most fast actions with 15lb McCoy Mean Green and a 6.3:1 gear ratio reel. This set up works better when I upsize my hooks to Mustad KVD size 2, 2x strong.

I throw em with a revo SX 6:4:1 and 6'6" M Veritas rod with 12lb seaguar invizx fluorocarbon

Ive been using an old blue Loomis GL2 mh mod fast with a gen 2 Revo STX 6.4 for squarebills...havent had a ton of luck as of yet but they are new to my lineup.

I'll usually switch out the hooks to similar sized Gamagatsu hooks, I'll occasionally move the hooks up one size, sometimes you can sometimes you can't, depends on the bait, and how it affects the action of the bait.  You really can't go wrong fishing any of the below baits:

Bomber Square A

KVD 1.0 and 1.5 Square Bills

RC 1.5

I use a Powell Endurance Cranking Rod 725CB with a Revo STX in the 6 gear version with 14lb Sunline Super FC Sniper. Typically I throw Bill Norman Big N squarebills, KVD 1.5s and 2.5s, 6th Sense 75x, Spro Little Johns, and a Shallow Bandit Flat Maxx. I always change the hooks to Gamagatsus but keep them the exact same size as the stock hooks

I use a shimano Clarus 7 ft medium heavy moderate tip rod, with a shimano 200e 6.3:1 citica reel. I usually use 12 pound p-line cxx, although I have a new spool of 12 pound seaguar red label that I'm bout to try out. My favorite squarebill is a kvd 1.5 . I just picked up a few of the new storm squarebills and while they have some cool features, I'm not sure I like the action of the plug very much.

The strike king lures just have so much erratic action to them, I feel like I get more strikes using them.

Don't use that red label around any wood or rocks. It will get frayed just looking at a rock. I like it in 8# for finesse fishing, but it is just absolutely terrible around any sort of cover. Love that stuff, the very poor abrasion resistance is my only negative.

Throwing squarebills to cover on heavy line, or searching with them a bit deeper is how I usually fish them. When I'm in the mood, and fish them around heavyish grass they can be killer, but you have to pay attention and have your head in the game.

Anybody use flouro for your squarebills?

Man I don't see how anybody can make the switch from braid to flouro... I spooled on some to try it out again but every time I end up not liking it, the first thing you notice is the loss of sensitivty and the second thing is line management and castability... I hate having it be perfectly straight in the beginning of the day and it looking like a phone cord after the trips over, if you don't have KVD line and lure you are screwed...

I'm gonna keep it on for at least 10 more trips to see if I warm up to it but every time I try to like flouro I go back to braid.
